Field Observation #1
Observe and record:
1. What procedures teachers follow during bus and playground duties; and/or Jr/Sr High
differences? (Parking lot, between classes, assemblies, assigned/voluntary duties other…)
a. The teacher that I was observing would not pick up any kids from the bus area
another school staff would and for playground duty she would watch them play
and when their recess was over and would move to the cafeteria, the teacher
would leave the cafeteria and go to the teacher’s lounge and eat before she would
pick them up again.
2. What, if any, are the procedures and/or expectations for student behavior in the
lunchroom, halls, library, and computer lab, other…?
a. The expectation of the students in hallways, library, and computer lab their voices
have to be a 0 which is no talking unless you need the teacher’s attention. As well
as they have to cross their arms and have their index finger above their lip to show
they are silent. On the other hand, in the lunchroom the children can talk at a 10
which is their normal voice and having a conversation with their friends. A
teacher’s procedure to calm the student down from lunchroom voices to silent
voices, is that they tell their student to breathe in and shake all their energy to be
prepared to learn.
3. Who are the specialists? What do they do? Where are their rooms (offices)?
a. I was only there on a Wednesday were certain children would go to their specials
but I didn’t have the chance to know her name as the teacher did not tell me what
her name was. The specialist room is across the cafeteria, where they help lower
ended student who cannot read at their level or have trouble with the math. As
well as take out students who have a learning disability to go out of the class for a
bit.
Familiarize yourself with the School District Handbook (not to be confused with the
handbook for students and parents) which outlines school wide rules and policies. If you
can secure a copy of the Student/Parent Handbook, do so… Be prepared to access the
District Teacher Handbook on-line because hard copy of this document is often changing.
Note: Ask the teacher, administrator, or office manager to assist you in getting the on-
line web site. Record the information to the following questions:
4. How do teachers handle an adult who wishes to take a child home early?
b. Teachers handles a child going home early by first making sure they go to the
front and tell the front staff why they need to be taken out early. Than the teacher
will be notified by intercom which student is going home and sends the student to
the front with the material that they had learned and will learn for the end of the
day.
5. What are the “fire drill” procedures?
a. The teacher is to make sure the students get up as quick and safe as they can while
the teacher grabs the folder with the procedures and names of the students and
heads out toward the grass field. When they meet their spot on the field the
teacher is to call out the names of the students to see if any child is missing. This
process is timed by the fire department to set a standard and if they are not met
than the school has to improve by the next fire drill.
6. What are the “shelter in place” procedures?
a. The teacher is to tell the students to stay calm in their seats while the teacher locks
the door and places an “X” with tape on the door.
7. Do teachers have a first aid kit available in the classroom? What are the universal
precautions?
a. In the classroom that I was in there seem to not a visible first aid kit and when I
asked where here kit was, she responded that the nurse and not given her back her
kit with refills of the band aids and gauze with everything else. The universal
precaution would be that if a student get a cut to deep the teacher does what they
can to clean it and if it does not stop they are then walked to the nurse’s office.
8. List ONE thing that was of the most interest to you as you reviewed the teacher
handbook.
9. Schools are considered a part of the community. Investigate how the school invites the
community to participate in school activities.
a. They invite the community to participate in school activities by letting the parent
come when they have school night affairs at the school. For example like Dad
breakfast, trunk-or-treats, assemblies that award their child with certificates.
10. What types of extracurricular activities occur on the school grounds?
a. I know they have a trunk-or-treat during Halloween to make the students as well
as the parents participate with the teachers and staff and to see their child interact
with their classmates and administration.
11. Does the school share a “partnership” with the community? (i.e. business such as:
McDonalds, Applebee’s have programs as partners in education with some schools.)
What do the partnerships entail; what benefit to the school and students does the
partnership have?
a. I know they have a partnership with Applebee’s and it usually is when they have a
family night and have the parents come to participate with the staff and teachers
of the student.
12. How do parents participate as partners in the schools?
a. They participate by volunteering when they have field day, when they have
special activities with parents, as well as when the parents want to help the
teacher in a class.
