RRH overview
RRH solution
The Remote Radio Head (RRH) solution is designed for macro-cellular application in
dense areas, where site acquisition is difficult, and on the sites where installation
constraints prevent the use of regular macro NodeBs.
The Alcatel-Lucent RRH solution is based on the remote RF block concept and involves
the following sites:
• The centralized NodeB site
• The remote RRH site
In the RRH solution, the transceiver, the power amplifier, and the filter functions are
located close to the antennas on the remote RRH site. The remote RF module interfaces
with the digital rack of the main NodeB cabinet through an optical fiber link. The RRHs
support Common Protocol Radio Interface (CPRI).
The RRH system is composed of the following parts:
• The digital cabinet - A dedicated BTS equipped only with digital modules or a
standard BTS with an additional optical interface.
• The Remote Radio Head module
With RRH, BTS supports the following cells:
• Local cells - Local cells are managed by the RF modules inside the BTS. The radio
frequency interface of local cells is at the BTS bulkhead level.
• Remote cells - Remote cells are managed by the RRH. The radio frequency interface
of remote cells is at the RRH bulkhead level.
The RRH can be deployed in networks that support different technologies and can also be
shared by different operators (RAN sharing).

RRH 60W
The RRH60W operates within the following bandwidths:
• 2100 MHz (RRH60-21 or RRH60-21A, RRH60-21C)
• 1900 MHz (RRH60-19)
• 900 MHz (RRH60-09)
• 850 MHz (RRH60-08)

RRH 60W interfaces
The RRH60W supports the following interfaces:
• Two Optical connectors - One each to connect to the d2U and for daisy-chain
configuration.
• One external alarm connector - The RRH can report four external alarms to the OAM
management system.
• One Antenna Interface Standards Group (AISG) connector
• Two Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers
On the 9326 d2U, six optical interfaces (LC optical port) are located on the core
controller module to support RRH connection.

RRH2X60W
The RRH2X60 is available in multiple frequency bands to support multiple technologies
such as W-CDMA and LTE.
The RRH2X60 supports the following features and functions:
• Two RF transmit paths, each supporting 60W over a 20 MHz operational bandwidth.
• Up to four RF receiver paths that support UTRAN sharing and STSRx+y
configurations for the disaggregated spectrum.
• A Multi Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA) per transmit path.
• Support for operations in 3GPP band I (2100 MHz), band II (1900 MHz), band V
(850 MHz).
The 9326 d2U supports RRH2X60-2100 MHz, RRH 2X60-1900 MHz, and RRH
2X60-850 MHz.
The 9396 d2U supports RRH 2X60-1900 MHz and RRH 2X60-850 MHz only.
RRH2X60 interfaces
The RRH2X60 has the following interfaces:
• Two CPRI interfaces
The CPRI interfaces the RRH with the digital part of the Node B. The optical fibres
carry the downlink and uplink (main and diversity) base band signals.
• One AISG connector
• Alarm interfaces
– The RRH 2X60-21 has one alarm interface and can report up to 4 external alarms
to the OMC.
– The RRH 2X60-1900 and RRH 2X60-850 have two alarm interfaces and can
report up to six external alarms to the OMC.

Supported RRH configurations
The RRH for remote cells can be configured with one, two, three, or four frequencies.
The supported RRH configuration options are as follows:
• STSR1 for remote cells with one frequency
• STSR2 or STSR (1+1) for remote cells with dual frequency
• STSR3 or STSR (2+1) for remote cells with three frequencies
• STSR 2+2 for remote cells with four frequencies
Note:
• STSR refers to the configuration of three sectors with one RRH per sector.
• STSR x+y refers to the configuration of three sectors, with a single RRH
(RRH2X60W) or two RRHs (RRH60W) per sector.
• STSR can be depopulated to two or one sector configuration.
• With UA08.1, the 9326 d2U NodeB equipped with RRH2X60 supports the
STSRz and STSRx+y configurations, with operational carriers sharing up to
2X60W RF power.
• The 9396 d2U NodeB (OneBTS) equipped with the RRH2X60W does not support
the STSRx+y configuration.
• The 9396 d2U NodeB (OneBTS) does not support daisy-chaining of the
RRH2X60W.
Several RRHs can be connected to a single BTS cabinet.
The following configuration types support multiple RRH connection:
• Star configuration
In the star configuration scenario, each RRH is connected to the BTS cabinet using its
own fiber. For example, if there are two RRHs per sector, each RRH is connected
directly to the BTS.
• Daisy-chain configuration
In the daisy-chain RRH configuration scenario, one optical fiber can be shared by
more than one RRH. For example, in the STSR configuration, three RRHs can be
configured on the same fiber for three sectors. In the STSRx+y configuration, two
RRHs on the same sector can be configured to use a single fiber.
Figure 2-1, “RRH in NodeB site” (p. 2-5) illustrates the integration of the RRH within a
NodeB site.

Multiple RRH variants in STSRx+y configuration

The following rules apply to the multiple RRH connections in a daisy-chain
configuration:
• The RRHs from different manufacturers cannot be configured in daisy-chain.
• The RRHs of different RF power variants can be used in a daisy-chain. To configure
two RRHs in a daisy-chain for a single sector, the RRHs must be of the same RF
power variant. For example, in the STSRx+y configuration, if x is RRH 60W, then y
must be of the same RF power variant (RRH60W).
• In case of dual band configuration, the RRHs with different frequency bands and RF
power variants can be configured. However, the configuration with the RRHs from
the different manufacturers is not supported. .
The following rules apply to the multiple RRH connection in a star configuration:
• Up to three different RRHs can be used in a star configuration with one RRH type per
sector.
• If two RRHs are configured per sector, the RRHs sharing the same antenna must be of
the same RF power variant.

TRDU and STSRx+y configuration

The TRDU 60W supports up to four carriers.

TRDUs in daisy-chain
Several TRDUs (TRDU 60W) to be connected on a single daisy-chained CPRI optical
link from a single controller CPRI port.
Up to three TRDUs per fibre can be connected in a daisy-chain configuration.
The following STSRx+y variants are supported with the TRDU in a daisy-chain
configuration:
• STSR1+1 - With three CPRI ports, three fibres, and one carrier per TRDU
• STSR2+2 -With three CPRI ports, three fibres, and two carriers per TRDU
• STSR2+1 -With three CPRI ports, three fibres, and three carriers between two
TRDUs.
Note: The TRDU 40W does not support daisy-chain configurations.
The following rules apply to the multiple TRDU connection in a daisy-chain
configuration:
• TRDU daisy-chaining is supported only for the following variants:
– TRDU60-21
– TRDU60-21B
• The TRDUs must be of the same variant for a daisy-chain configuration, for example,
the TRDU60-21 and TRDU60-21. The TRDUs of different variants, for example,
TRDU60-21 and TRDU60-21B cannot be configured in a daisy-chain.
• The TRDU from different manufacturers cannot be configured in a daisy-chain.
• The TRDU daisy-chaining is supported with the RRH in dual band configuration.
However, the RRH and TRDU used in this configuration must be from the same
manufacturer.

TRDU and RRH

The RRH and TRDU can be configured on the same 9326 d2U equipment.
The RRH and TRDU mixed configuration is used for the following configuration
scenarios:
• To extend support to six sectors - To support six sectors, three local sectors with one
TRDU per sector and three remote sectors with one RRH per sector can be used.
• Dual band configuration - In dual band configuration, three sectors in the 2100MHz
band with the TRDU and three remote sectors in the 900MHz band with the RRH can
be used.
Up to three RRHs and three TRDU can be used in a star configuration.

TRDU module
The Transmitter Receiver Duplexer Unit (TRDU) is a radio equipment to manage the
functions between base band CPRI and radio air interfaces.
A TRDU module in a BTS equipment provides the following functions:
• Radio Transceiver - Digital signal processing, and RF modulation and demodulation.
• PA - Power amplification
• RX - Receiver
• Duplexor
The following figure illustrates the TRDU architecture:

Antenna system management

Antenna system
The following types of antenna configuration are applicable to the STSRx+y
configuration:
• Antenna direct connection without TMA
In the antenna connection without TMA mode:
– The antenna ports of the RRH or TRDU are connected directly to antenna ports
through the RF feeders.
For the connection without TMA, the tmaAccessType attribute is set to noTma.
– If a Remote Electrical Tilt Automatic (RETA) antenna kit is used, a RETA
controller is added to the NodeB. For the RRH configuration, the AISG control
signal and DC supply are carried out of RRH to the Remote Control Unit (RCU).
To support three sectors, three lines are available on the Central Control Unit
(CCU) .
If the NodeB is equipped with the TRDU, a CCU and an external line are required
to manage RETA.
• Antenna direct connection, with TMA
In this mode, an additional amplifier can be added on each antenna branch to
compensate for feeder loss on the uplink path.
The TMA can be used in following two modes:
– Current Windows Alarm (CWA)
In the CWA mode, the TMA is powered (+12VDC on each TMA branch) and
monitored from the RRH or TRDU.
For the TMA support in the CWA mode, the tmaAccessType attribute must be set
to tmaUmtsOnly.
– AISG
The AISG mode is used to pilot the RCU on the antenna side.
With TMA in AISG mode, the AISG control signal and DC supply is carried out
through additional RS485 AISG cable to RRH or antenna.
In this mode, the TMA is powered and monitored by the CCU (AISG primary
device), located on the NodeB side.
For the TMA support in AISG mode, the tmaAccessType attribute must be set to
tmaMix.
Note: The RRH 2X60W supports the TMA in the AISG mode. The RRH 2X60W
supports only the AISG 2.0 version.
Note: If the tmaAccessType is set to TMAtmaUmtsOnly, the integratedAisgDevices-
Management attribute under the BTSEquipment object must be set to 1, so that the
WMS can monitor the TMA.

RETA interface
The RETA allows adjustment of antenna tilt without the site visit.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The RRH2X60W, RRH60-21, RRH60-09, RRH60-21A, and RRH60-21C variants
support the RETA.
The RETA interface is controlled from the e-CCM-U or x-CCM-U of the Node B
connected to the RRH through a fiber link.
The Antenna Interface Standard Group (AISG) control signal and DC supply are carried
out of the following:
• The RRH to the Remote Control Unit (RCU) if there is no TMA
• The Tower Mounted Amplifier (TMA) AISG to the RCU if there is a TMA AISG
Note: The RRH2X60W supports RETA that is compatible with AISG 2.0.

TMA in AISG Mode without RETA

In case of STSR configuration, the RRH provides DC input to the TMA on each feeder.
The parameter tmaAccesstype is set to TmaUmtsOnly.
In case of STSRx+y, RRH1 provides DC input (+24VDC) to the TMA on the Tx/Rx port,
through a smart Bias-Tee.

engineer by the network designers.
“Parameters for STSRx+y configuration” (p. 3-4) lists the configuration parameters and
attributes to set for the STSRx+y configuration.

Parameter Object Description

AntennaAccess/ BTSEquipment Identifies the physical antenna connection
antennaConnectionId on the DDM of the BTS, one antenna
connection is related to a main and a
diversity antenna.
Valid values:
• For RRH configuration: The
antennaConnection values of RRH are
based on the antennaConnection =
100*(Cabinet number)+10*Optical
fiber ID + Daisy rankformula. For
example, antennaConnection_11
• For TRDU configuration: The
antennaConnection values of TRDU are
based on the antennaConnection =
1000(if TRDU)+100*(Cabinet
number)+10*Optical fiberID+Daisy
rankformula. For example,
antennaConnection_1011
In these cases:
• Cabinet Number is 0 for main cabinet
(in case of Macro iBTS, Compact,

Parameter Object Description

antennaAccessId (for RRH RemoteRadioHead This parameter associates a
configuration) RemoteRadioHead with an
AntennaAccess/antennaConnection_<ID>
object. If the parameter is not configured,
the BTS uses the instance of the
RemoteRadioHead object as the
antennaAccessId.
If two RemoteRadioHead instances have the
same antennaAccessId:
• The RemoteRadioHead with lower
instance is connected on main antenna
and is therefore associated to
LocalCellGroupwith the
frequencyGroupId value as 0.
• The RemoteRadioHead with higher
instance is connected on the diversity
antenna and therefore will be associated
to LocalCellGroupwith the
frequencyGroupIdvalue as 1.
For example,
RemoteRadioHead/11::antennaAccessID
=AntennaAccess/antennaConnection_11
refers to sector 11 main antenna and
RemoteRadioHead/12::antennaAccessID
=AntennaAccess/antennaConnection_11
refers to sector 11 diversity antenna.
For RRH, the following antennaAccessId
values are available under the
AntennaAccessobject:
• 3 sectors configuration -
antennaConnection_11,
antennaConnection_21, and
antennaConnection_31.
• 6 sectors configuration -
antennaConnection_11,
antennaConnection_21,
antennaConnection_31,
antennaConnection_41,
antennaConnection_51, and
antennaConnection_61
In STSR x+y configuration, two RRHs can
share the same antennaConnectionId. For
more information, see “Antenna system
management” (p. 2-18)
