Cultural Heritage/Ethnicity
• My cultural heritage dates back to my
mother’s side back to 1928 and 1934
the year my grandparents were born in
Guadalajara Mexico.
• In 1972, at the age of 16 my mother
left her parents and siblings and came
to the U.S. Her home now was located
in Los Angeles CA.
• In 1964, at the age of 10 my father, his
mother and his siblings left Mexico
and traveled to Mexicali, North Baja
California. In 1967 he and his family
arrived to Los Angeles CA.
• Being born in America, I consider my
ethnicity Mexican/American.
Type of Family/Geographical region
• I am my parent’s second child.
• I grew up in a conjugal (nuclear)
family and have always lived with my
mom, dad, and brother.
• We lived in Compton CA, for 16
years. The population was mostly
African American and Latino, so I was
exposed to those cultures growing up.
• As a child, I can remember hearing
gun shots at night, the neighborhood
that I lived in was very poor/ghetto
with a large amount of crime and drug
use, drug dealing, bad schools etc.
Linguistic
• I was raised in a household where
Spanish was the primary spoken
language by my mother and father.
• Having two immigrant parents who
spoke zero English, I learned the
English language in kindergarten grade.
• English then became my second
language.
• Knowing how to speak and write two
languages; Spanish/English, has
developed my cognitive development
and strengthen my language skills,
vocabulary, grammar, and
communication skills.
Socioeconomic Status/Education Level
• I grew up attending school district
public schools, starting with
kindergarten.
• I attended Roosevelt Elementary School
and completed grades 1st thru 5th.
• Next, I attended Whaley Middle School
were I completed grades 6th thru 8th.
• I graduated from Lynwood High School
in 2009 earning my High School
Diploma.
• With financial aid help, I enrolled to El
Camino College in 2009, and began to
take general education courses.
• I am currently a student at the College
of southern Nevada pursuing a degree in
early childhood education.
