Assignment #1 BTEN 2313
1. Dimensional homogeneity in equations. (10 marks)
a) The displacement y due to the action of a progressive wave with amplitude A,
frequency ω/2π and velocity v is given by the equation:
where t is time and x is distance from the origin.
Show that the sine function, 𝜔(𝑡 − 𝑣 ), is dimensionless.

b) The relationship between α, the mutation rate of Escherichia coli, and temperature T,

can be described using an Arrhenius-type equation:

where E is specific activation energy and R is the ideal gas constant. Show the
dimensional homogeneity of the equation.

2. Gas leaving a fermenter at close to 1 atm pressure and 25 °C has the following
composition: 78.2% nitrogen, 19.2% oxygen, 2.6% carbon dioxide. Calculate the mass of
100 cm3 of N2. (10 marks)

3. A holding tank with capacity 5 m3 initially contains 2 m3 of 20 mM NaOH solution. An

additional 2 m3 of 20 mM NaOH solution plus 1 m3 of water are added, what is the final
concentration of NaOH. (30 marks)
(i) Expressed as molarity?
(ii) Expressed as % w/v?
(iii) Expressed as g cm-3 ?
(iv) Expressed as ppm? Justify your answer.

4. A steel cylinder containing compressed air is stored in a fermentation laboratory ready to

provide aeration gas to a small-scale bioreactor. The capacity of the cylinder is 50 litres,
the absolute pressure is 60 psi and the temperature is 20 ℃. One day in mid-summer
when the air conditioning breaks down, the temperature in the laboratory rises to 38 ℃
and the valve at the top of the cylinder is accidentally left open. Estimate the proportion
of air that will be lost. What assumptions will you make? (10 marks)

A gas sparger in a fermenter operated at 25 ⁰C and 1 atm produces bubbles of about 1 mm

diameter. Given the values of ρL = 0.8920 g/cm3 , 𝒟 = D = 2.5 × 10–5 cm2/s and μL = 0.90
cP, calculate the values of ρG the mass transfer coefficient, kL. (20 marks)

6. A solution contains 40 wt% water, 15 wt% ethanol, 12 wt% butanol, 15 wt% glycerol
(C3H8O3), 6 wt% formaldehyde (CH2O), and 12 wt% hexane (C6H14). What is the basis of
your calculation? What is the mole fraction of each component? (20 marks)
