In this experiment we studied the specific gravity of a certain
liquid and we now know that specific gravity of a liquid is expressed as a ratio of the density of the liquid sample and the density of water. We tested miscible liquid and immiscible liquid. For miscible liquid we use sodium and water. First weigh an empty graduated cylinder and place some amount of liquid in the graduated cylinder that we weigh. We get the weight of sample by getting the difference by subtracting the weight of graduated and the weight of graduated cylinder with sample liquid. When we get the weight of sample liquid, we check for sample liquid temperature then we compute for the density of the sample. We did the same with the immiscible liquid, for immiscible liquid we used oil. After we get all the we now begin to compute so that, all the unknown in the data will be filled so when we tabulate all the data we can get the average of density so the percentage of difference can be computed by the use of all the groups data. ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA RESULT
The range of mass of graduated cylinder is 99.54g to 109.44g, for
mass of graduated cylinder with sample liquid (sodium) range is 255.89g to 285.94g and for the range of mass of sample liquid (sodium) is 146.5g to 158.9g. Volume of sample was 100ml for all the groups that perform when looking at density the lowest group was group 5 they computed their density 1465kg/m3 while the highest density for sample liquid (sodium) was group 7 the get the value of 1568.4 while my group got the density value of 1582.8 and the average density for sample liquid (sodium) was 1547.3875kg/m3. While in water the lowest density was group 4 and the get the value 980.7 and the highest density was group 7 with the value of 991.7. The average density in water sample was 986.7625kg/m3 while my group got the density value 987.3kg/m3 so when looking at the average our group was close to the average of density almost perfect. For immiscible liquid we get the specific gravity by using the height of water and height of sample. The value we get was 65mm and 75mm respectively. We computed specific gravity of 0.87. CONCLUSION
I therefore concluded that after performing the laboratory
exercise I now understand the principles and instruments used in the exercises especially the U-tube I know now why it is design like a U shape. And also I now know how to determine the specific gravity of a liquid using height of water and height of oil only. Applying what I’ve learned in this experiment was useful for the future subject or even when I become engineer, knowing little things is better than knowing nothing. PHOTOS OF SET-UP
