How Sound Works (In Rooms)

It was a good informational video on how acoustics works. It was explained

there how sound waves moves, bounces and absorbs on different acoustical
materials. There are sound absorber, sound reflector and sound diffusor. It’s good to

know these stuff if I am to design different kind of rooms.

Sound can either be good or bad to hear. With the use of different acoustical
treatment such as sound absorber, sound reflector and sound diffusor, the quality of
sound can be improved. It was demonstrated in the video how it sounds when you
produce impact noise in a room with no acoustical treatment wherein a concrete wall
is present. Since this material is obviously a sound reflector, it doesn’t sound good.
Impact noise is more bothering to hear. When sound diffusors where attached on the

wall, it sounds better and not bothering at all.

With the help of this information, I understand now how acoustical treatments
work and how important they are. I can now improve sound quality and regulate
destructive interference between sound waves whenever I design architectural
interiors by using both sound absorbers and diffusors in one room.

Acoustic Panels (What & Where)

This instructional video is very effective if you’re quite confused about acoustic
panels. John Calder explained how each kind of acoustic panels are used. I’m quite
confident this time I can decide where to put these acoustic panels if I am to design a

room interior.

There are two types of acoustic panels: absorbers and diffusors. Using geometry
and physics, we have to identify the reflection points first. He demonstrated it using a
mirror as if sound waves are light waves (because they basically work the same). Place
the curved acoustic diffusor on the reflection points. Put beside them the acoustic
absorbers which are flat. This will maximize the sound as if bounces around. Then put

ceiling clouds as well because sound reaches the ceiling too and not just walls.

It was stated that it’s not really a must to put acoustical treatment at every point
of the room. We just have to place the right acoustic panels on the right part of the

room and definitely, the sound quality will increase from ten to a hundred.

I can now understand the importance of acoustic panels and the right position
of them on a room. With these bunch of information, designers can now be sound

designers too using geometry, physics and creativity, of course.
