FOREWORD

Hebrew is a simple language. Despite the formidable appearance of the square

characters and the multiplicity of the minute vowel points, the average student finds
to his surprise that before he has finished his first year he has covered the grammar
and can start reading narrative Hebrew "right out of the Bible. " Irregularities are
few, inflection is elementary, vocabulary is limited, and syntax is as nothing when
compared with, say, Biblical Greek. Why then, after graduation, do so few students
maintain the use of their Hebrew in daily personal devotions and study and in public
Bible teaching?

William R. Harper, the great Hebrew teacher of a past generation, answered,

"The chief difficulty to overcome mastery of the Hebrew language is the
in the
acquisition of a vocabulary. " True, the words are simple; but they are Semitic,
not Indo-European, and have practically no English cognates, cf. Gen. 11:7. The
serious student must therefore discipline himself and learn, not just two hundred
or so words to go with a set of exercises, but the two thousand or so that occur with
any degree of frequency in the Hebrew Old Testament. He will doubtless then forget
them and have to learn them all over again. But for the extensive literature of the
Old Testament this is, after all, a very limited vocabulary; the student should be
grateful the Scripture was not inspired in Arabic! Let him make up his own
vocabulary cards from the Hebrew frequency lists, let him keep thumbing them
through, and a few minutes reading a day will give him God's original words as a
life-time possession.

The lists that follow are of that occur ten times or more in the
Hebrew words
Old Testament, in groups in the order of their frequency, plus more complete
listings of particles. They are based upon William R. Harper's Hebrew Vocabularies
(New York: Scribners', c. 1890), now out of print and difficult to obtain. As far as
possible Harper's familiar divisions, numberings, and definitions have been retained,
though additions and corrections have been made as required. In Part III. ,
Hebrew
Particles, complete reworking was necessary. The present study is a revision and
enlargement of the work published by Trinity Seminary in Chicago, Jan. 1955. The
general response has, within the year, exhausted the initial printing and encouraged
this more permanent form of the new edition. It is offered with the hope that its

presence may help raise up modern men of Jehoshaphat, who "taught in Judah, and
had the book of the law of the LORD with them, " II Chron. 17:9.
