PARTS OF A SMART WELL

SMART WELL (DISCONNECT TOOL) Halliburton©

Is an electro-hydraulic device that facilitates the removal of the upper completion from the lower completion
without any destructive (or mechanical) intervention, leaving the smart completion in place. Again, it
facilitates reconnection of tubing (as well as hydraulic & electric lines), when upper completion is redeployed.

Applications

 Multi-trip completions
 ESP (Electric submersible Pump) applications
 Safety valve replacement (SCSSV)
 Deep water plug & abandonment

Benefits

 Minimizes risks associated with workover (since the lower completion is left in place)
 Orientation (positioning w.r.t a reference system) or special alignment not required
 Compatible with oil or water-based fluid control line

SMART WELL (SCSSV) Schlumberger©

A downhole safety valve operated from surface facilities through a control line (a small diameter hydraulic line
used to operate downhole completion equipment. Most systems operated by control lines operate on a fail-
safe basis, meaning it is built to effect actions to protect other equipment in the event of a failure. For
example, the control line is pressurised at all points, so that any failure or leak will lead to a drop in control line
pressure) strapped to the external surface of the production tubing.

TYPES OF SCSSV

 Wireline retrievable (the safety equipment can be run & retrieved on a slickline)
 Tubing retrievable

The fail-safe method of control is used here. The hydraulic control pressure is used to hold open a ball (or
flapper). A drop in the pressure will cause this flapper to close or shut.
SMART WELL (GAS LIFT VALVE) Schlumberger©

A valve used in gas lift system to lift gas into the production conduit. The gas lift valve is located in the gas lift
mandrel (houses the valve, providing communication with the annulus). […to be continued]

SMART WELL (FLAT PACK) Halliburton©

This is the physical link between surface control systems and downhole equipment. It comes in different
configurations depending on the well. Flat packs can consist of hydraulic lines or a tubing encased conductor
(TEC) or both. Its specification is based on the wells P & T.
TEC provides conduit for power (electric) transmission or communication between surface and downhole
equipment (sensors, actuators). The control lines carry hydraulic power (from fluid under pressure) to facilitate
the movement or operation of ICVs or ball valves (in the case of gas lift valves). Mild steel cables (bumper bars)
are incorporated in some cases to prevent crushing of the flat pack.

SMART WELL (PACKER) Schlumberger© Petrowiki©

A device run into the well with a smaller initial outside diameter that expands to seal the annulus. It isolates &
contains produced fluids and pressures within the tubing string. They have flexible elastomeric elements that
expand. The two forms of parker are generally production and inflatable packers. The expansion of the former
may be achieved by squeezing elastomeric element between two plates, forcing the sides to bulge outwards.
For the latter, expansion is by pumping a fluid into a bladder (a bag that can fill with air). Packers can be set
hydraulically or mechanically or electrically.
Packers can be permanent (milled or drilled) or retrievable.

Packers have 4 key features

 A wedge-shaped (triangular) device, which penetrate and grip the casing
wall when the packer is set.
 Bevelled (cut so that the slip & cone surface can meet at an angle < 90) to
match the back of the slip forming a ramp (inclined connection) driving the
slip outward when setting force is applied.
 Creates the seal
 Also called body
