ABSTRACT

River vastly used to fulfill the society needs of water. But the increasing
industry works and the society habits have reduced the quality of river. Hence a
study was conducted focusing in water purification using the electrocoagulation
and ozonation methods to improve the water quality in Indonesia. The purpose of
the research is the improvement of water quality to make sure the society use good
water for living. The research method begins by making an electrocoagulation
reactor using the plastic containers. After that, begin the installation of the positive
electrode (zinc) and the negative electrode (galvalum) with an opposite position.
The next step is entering 3 liters of water that will be purified into the
electrocoagulation reactor. Then put the ozone generator output hose into the
water. After that, connect the two electrode to a DC current source with a 12 volts
voltage. The DC current that used is derived from the AC current that had been
rectified by the AC to DC adapter. Next, turn on ozone generator and
electrocoagulation reactor with 12 DC volt voltage. The variation of water
purification duration is 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes. The result show
that the electrocoagulation and ozonation methods caused the alteration of
physical and chemical parameters on the tested water. The most effective
treatment time is 60 minutes. It produce alterations in physical parameter which
include the decrease in turbidity of 13.86 NTU, the decrease in conductivity of 61
μs, the decrease in total dissolved solids of 45 mg/l, and alterations in chemical
characteristics which include the increase in pH of 0.95, the decrease in hardness
of 80 mg/l, the decrease in calcium of 13.63 mg/l, the decrease in magnesium of
16.13 mg/l, the decrease in ferum of 0.25 mg/l, the decrease in copper of 0.05
mg/l, the decrease in chloride of 3 mg/l, and the decrease in ammonia of 0.31
mg/l. According to this research, the electrocoagulation and ozonation methods
can be used to improve river water quality.
