COURSE OBJECTIVES:
(1) Apply the principles of thermodynamic analysis to Rankine Cycle and Brayton Cycle
power plants.
(2) Learn fundamental combustion analysis.
(3) Understand the principles behind the basic hardware in power plants.
(4) Consider the political, environmental and economic factors behind different power
generating techniques.
(5) The types of renewable energy resources, the greenhouse effect and pollution and its
control.
(6) Indicators of financial performance and economics of power generators.
(7) Improve written communication skills.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
1. Students will become familiar with power plant systems, terms and definitions and basic
power plant engineering design calculations.
2. Students will become familiar with the proper design and application of power plant related
equipment.
3. Students will become familiar with recognized standards utilized in the design and operation
of power plant equipment.
4. Students will prepare and present topical issues relevant to power plant design and operations.

Unit I – Introduction (Week 1)


Raw Energy Resources, Direct and Indirect Energy Conversion System Power Plants

Unit II – Analysis of Steam Cycles (Week 2 and 3)


Introduction, Rankine cycle Reheat cycle, Regenerative cycle, Reheat-Regenerative cycle, Feed-
water heaters, Binary vapor cycle
Unit III – Fuels and Combustion (Week 4 and 5)
Introduction, Classification of fuels, Analysis of coal and Combustion Stoichiometry,
Experimental determination of products of combustion, Enthalpy of Formation, Adiabatic flame
temperature, Heating values of fuels, Experimental determination of heating values of fuels,
Dissociation and equilibrium constant.

Unit IV - Steam Generators (Boilers) and Steam Turbines (Week 6)


Introduction, Classification of boilers, Types of boilers, Boiler mountings and accessories,
Performance of boilers; Boiler draught, Steam Turbines, Impulse And Reaction Turbines,
Velocity Diagrams, Axial Thrust On Rotor, Performance Of Steam Turbines, Governing Of
Steam Turbines.

Unit V - Combustion Mechanism, Combustion Equipment and Firing Methods (Week 7)


Introduction, Fuel Bed Combustion, Mechanical Stokers, Pulverized Coal Firing, Fuel Oil and
Firing Gas firing, Combined Gas Fuel-Oil Firing.

Unit VI - Steam Condensers, Condensate-Feed-water and Circulating Water Systems (Week 8)


Steam Condensers, Condensate Feed Water Systems, Circulating Water Systems

UNIT 7 - Diesel Power Plants (Week 9)


Introduction, Plant Layout and Types of Diesel Power Plants, Selection of Diesel Engines
Applications of Diesel Power Plants.

Unit 8 - Gas Turbine Power Plants (Week 10 and 11)


Introduction to Air Breathing Jet Propulsion Engines Athodyd, Gas Turbine power plant, Types
of Gas Turbine Power plants, Parts of Gas Turbine Power plants, Combustion Chambers and
Reheating, Regeneration and Inter cooling, Development of Thrust and Propulsive Efficiency,
Parametric Analysis of Gas Turbine Engine Cycles.

Unit 9 - Renewable Energy Sources (Week 12)


Introduction, Solar Energy and Photovoltaic Power Generation, Hydro Power Generation,
Geothermal Power Generation, Wind energy Power Generation, Biomass Power Generation,
Nuclear Power Generation, Greenhouse and Environmental Degradation, Pollution and Its
Control

Unit 10 - Power Plant Economy (Week 13 and 14)


Introduction to Economics, Principles of Engineering Economy, Concepts of Cost and Time
