TSL 1_U1 Importance of Grammar.

I belive grammar is important for English language teaching and learning, however it is reelevant
for this paper to clarify how, when and why is necesary.

The teaching praxis allows an educatot to learn how language is acquired, my personal experience
has shown how this process can be gradual, natural and useful for learners. Grammar concepts can
be included successfuly in commnicative approach class.

Having a course book can indeed be beneficial for the students grammar needs, as mentioned in the
second extract from Brumfit, C. J. And Johnson, K. (eds) The Communicative Approach to Language
Teaching (Oxford University Press, 1979, p 165) presenting laguage as it was adquired at home by
“function” and with the explicit objective of communication can leave the study of grammar for the
coursebook thus allowing the discovery and adquisition of the grammatical formulas as a part of “the
bigger picture.”

A teacher should not asume that the syntactic structural knowledge is enough as basis for language
adquisition, the best results in my experience are achieved including this information as a small part of
a larger curriculum that includes a communicative topic, fuctional phrases and topic-related lexis.

This construction of grammatical knowlege is important beyond the communicative goals of a simple
EFL course, to the students who want to use English for later academic goals, like a master's degree
or a phD proper grammar is a problematic issue due to a lack of explicit kowledge of rules and lexis for
academic reading and writing.

Every teacher has to remember to include grammar gradually and to present why is relevant to the
topic presented so the basis for future academic projects.
