Framing
Contents/ text including
linguistic features
In comparison to other
magazines I have researched
such as The Crack, this is a
very limited amount of text
and doesn't really go into
much detail. However, I think
this is the magazines intention
as the lack of content was also
present on the front cover.
This may be because it is a
fashion magazine therefore
the images will take
prioritization over the text as
these are what will most likely
draw in the reader.
The linguistic features are also
lacking in this contents page
for example most lines of text
are just factual and straight to
the point. They don't include
much humour, sarcasm or any
puns which suggests it is a
more serious and formal
The articles listed mainly
consist of scrapbooks, lists
and image like stories which
again emphasizes that the
magazine is more of a visual
than informal piece.
Similar to a regional
magazine, it as a section
dedicated to the contributors
that helped to edit and create
the issue. This however is on a
different page as even though
it is important, it is not as
important for a worldwide
magazine to have these
acknowledgements on the
contents page as it is for
regional magazines.
- This page is image led, with the image being
the most dominant and most eye-catching
convention on the page. The image is also
extremely big, taking up the majority of the
page in comparison to the limited amount
of text.
- The page is framed by a white border which
basically frames the image to stand out
even more.
- The layering of the words over the image
works very well however not a lot of the
text relates specifically to the image which is
a subversion from other magazines.
Essential Information
- The only essential information present on the
page are the page numbers. The numbers
and the fonts are the same colour as the list
of contents which does make them blend in
slightly and not appear as significant. INDIE
has however made the numbers stick out
from the alignment of the image which does
make them stand out as their own
convention. Some essential features that
have been left out from this page include: a
subscriptions box, acknowledgements, issue
number and online link.
Dominant Image
The dominant image has been
incorporated into the table of
contents using a shutter blind
overlay. These graphics have a
really good effect and look
extremely creative as a result.
The image itself is immediately
relevant to the magazine as it is
of a woman walking on a fashion
show and thus reflective on the
main genre.
Her clothing consists of pastel
bright colours which again stand
out from the monotone
background just like on the front
cover. The clothes are not every
day wear which again links to the
subversion of mainstream
attributes.
Although you can't see the
model’s face/eyes, I think the
main purpose of the dominant
image is to frame the layout of
the table and not to act as an
individual convention. The image
is seen more as a silhouette to
the contents table and therefore
is less significant than other
magazines dominant images.
The body language and posture
of the model implies she means
business and is very professional.
It is a lot bigger than most
dominant contents images.
The image is anchored at the
bottom right corner with the
name of the model and the page
number it is relevant too. This
recognition is important for
independent magazine but also
the page number reference
makes it more user-friendly.
The page however is a bit one
dimensional as it only as one
image and lacks the use of sub-
images to show wider content
and perspective. I think this is
simply down to the design
however as an overcrowding of
images would have clashed with
the striped edit.
Overall Style and Composition

My first opinions on this content page are very positive.

I've never seen a contents page composed in the same way
as this one and I really like how it takes a unique turn. The
style is simple, clean and professional at the same time as
being quirky, unique and original.

Even though it contains minimum information and the

table doesn't have much text, the way it has been
composed and positioned really fills the page and makes
use of every aspect. I especially like how the page is
framed by a white border, but the border doesn't restrict
the creativity. For example, the page numbers exceed the
lines of the border so even when professionally aligned,
the quirkiness is still made apparent.

My favourite feature is the shutter blind graphic that

incorporates the image with the table as I feel it is really
unique and never before done.

Heading

Heading subverts stereotypical conventions of worldwide

magazines reflecting the magazines genre that stems away
from the mainstream.

Is positioned in the top left corner of the page underneath

the white framing border. This mimic the position of the
masthead on the front cover which shows there is
continuity throughout the magazine. Again, it is the first
place the audience will look therefore is an effective
position to lead the page.

The typography is rather small in comparison to normal

contents pages and has large spacing between each letter.
This is similar to The Crack's letter spacing which implies
this is a common font technique of cultural magazines.

The colour black allows the font to stand out really well
from the white background and again inflicts the
monotone colour scheme.

Normally, the heading will just read "contents" or

"contents page" however INDIE magazine uses the phrase
"TABLE OF CONTENTS." This is a lot more formal and
sophisticated which is reflective of a mature audience. I
think it shows again that the magazine is trying to set itself
apart from other magazines by offering a new approach on
each page.
