ABSTRACT

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is caused by damage to the small blood vessels of

the retina in the posterior part of the eye of the diabetic patient. The retinal fundus

photographs are widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of various eye diseases

in clinics. It is also one of the main resources for mass screening of diabetic

retinopathy. A novel method for automatic detection of both microaneurysms and

hemorrhages in color fundus images is described and validated. In this project, the

main contribution is a new set of shape features, called Dynamic Shape Features,

which do not require precise segmentation of the regions to be classified. These

features represent the evolution of the shape during image flooding and allow

discriminating between lesions and vessel segments. The method is validated per-

lesion and per-image using six databases, four of which are publicly available. It

proves to be robust with respect to variability in image resolution, quality and

acquisition system.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am indebted to our Management and Principal Rohini College of

Engineering and Technology for providing excellent infrastructure facility.

I would also like to thank my advisor Mrs.R. Sahila Devi, M.Tech., Head

of CSE Department Rohini College of Engineering and Technology without her

passionate participation and input, this project could not have been successfully

conducted. And also I express deepest gratitude for her full support, expert

guidance understanding and encouragement throughout my study and research.

Thanks also go to my fellow graduate students at the Computer Science

and Engineering Department and staffs of Computer Science and Engineering

Department at Rohini College of Engineering and Technology. Special thanks to

my numerous friends who helped me throughout this small research work.

Finally I must express my very profound gratitude to my parents for

providing me with unfailing support and continuous encouragement throughout

my years of study and through the process of this project. This accomplishment

would not have been possible without them.

Thank you.
