b) Two large fixed parallel planes are 12 mm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled with
oil of viscosity 0.972 Ns/m 2. A Flat thin plate 0.25 m2 area moves through the oil at a velocity
of 0.3 m/s. calculate the drag force:
i. when the plate is equidistant from both the planes , and 10
ii. when the thin plate is at a distance of 4 mm from one of the plane surface

2 a) A metal plate 1.25 m x 1.25 m x 6 mm thick and weighing 90N is placed midway in the 24 mm

gap between the two vertical plane surfaces. The gap is filled with an oil of Sp gr 0.85 and µ =
3.0 N.s/m2.Determine the force required to lift the plate with a constant velocity of 0.15 m/s.
b) An oil film of mechanical thickness 2 mm is used for lubrication b/n a square plate of size 0.9
m x 0.9 m on an identical plane having an angle of inclination 300. The weight of square plate 10
is 350N and it slides down the plane with a uniform velocity of 0.3 m/s find the viscosity of
oil in Poise.
3 a) Derive the expression for Bernoulli’s equation from the principles of Euler’s Equation of
motion 12

b) A 6m long pipe is inclined at an angle of 300 with the horizontal. The smaller section of the
pipe which is at lower level is of 100 mm dia and the larger section of the pipe is of 300 mm
dia. If the pipe is uniformly tapering and the velocity of water at the smaller section is 1.8 08

m/s. determine the difference of pressures between the two sections

4 a) A pump has a tapering pipe running full of water . The pipe is placed vertically with the
diameter at the base and top being 1.2 and 0.6 m respt. The pressure at the upper end is 240
mm of Hg vacuum, while the pressure at the lower end is 15 kN/m 2.head loss to be 20% of 10
difference of velocity head. Calculate the discharge of the flow is vertically upwards and
difference of elevation is 3.9 m.

b) A turbine has a supply line of diameter 45 and a tapering draft tube as shown in fig. When the
flow in the pipe is 0.6 m 3/s the pressure head at point L upstream of the turbine is 35 m and
at a point M in the draft tube, where the diameter is 65 cm, the pressure head is -4.1 m Point
M is 2.2 m below the point L Determine the power output of the turbine by assuming 92% 10
efficiency.

5 The following data relate to a conical tube of length 3 m fixed vertically with its smaller end
upwards and carrying fluid in the downward direction .velocity of flow at smaller end is 10
m/s, velocity of flow at larger end 4 m/s. pressure head at smaller end is 4m of liquid, Loss of

6 A 400 mm diameter shaft is rotating at 200 rpm in a bearing of length 120 mm if the
thickness of oil film is 1.5 mm and the dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.7 Ns/m 2. Determine:
i. Torque required to overcome friction in bearing 10
ii. Power utilized in overcoming viscous resistance
