Safety Tips in Using Electric fans

• Read and follow the manual before using the

product. Use the electric fan only as prescribed
in the manual.
• Always unplug the electric fan when not in use,
when moving the fan from one place to another,
and before cleaning.
• Do not place electric fans on wet counters and
floors to protect against electric shock. Always
use on a dry level surface.
• Keep the electric fan away from open flame and
from cooking or other heating devices.
• When cleaning the fan, use soft moiseneted

Product Types Product Parts

• Electric fans consist of revolving blades that are
powered by an electric motor to propel and
produce a current of air.
• There are several types of electric fans, namely:
§ ceiling or orbit fans
§ table/desk/box/tower fans
§ pedestal/stand/floor fans
§ partition/exhaust fans
§ duct fans
Product for Mandatory Certification
• Electric fans are regulated by the Department of
Trade and Industry (DTI).
• The DTI-BPS only checks the safety
requirements of manual or remote-controlled
household electric fans that are 300 watts and
below with rated voltage being not more than
250V ac, 60Hz, plastic/metal blades.
• Manufacturers and importers should apply for a
Philippine Standard (PS) license and Import
Commodity Clearance (ICC) certificate,
respectively, before the products are
distributed and sold.
• The DTI Bureau of Product Standards (BPS)
acquires a sample of the electric fan for
inspections and testing based on the Philippine
National Standard (PNS) International
Electrotechnical Commision (IEC) 60335-2-
80:2000.
• Fan guard - safeguards the fan blade
• Fan blade - produces the air flow
• Fan motor - a motor that converts electricity to
mechanical work to propel the fan
• Switch buttons - controls the speed of the fan blade
• Stand - holds the fan in an upright position
• Base - serves as foundation and keeps the fan stable

Product Labels Based on PNS IEC 60335-2-
80:2006
The following are the required markings on the
electric fans based on the PNS IEC 60335-2-80:2006:
• Instruction manual for installation and use shall
be provided so that the electric fan can be used
safely.
• The instruction for installation shall specify:
§ the model or type reference of luminaires
which may be installed in fans which are
constructed for this purpose;
§ if the fan is intended for mounting in outside
windows or walls;
§ for fans intended to be mounted at high level,
that the fans are to be installed so that the
blades are more than 2.3 meters above the
floor;
§ that precautions must be taken to avoid the
back-flow of gases into the room from the
open flue of gas or open-fire appliances.
Product Visual Inspection
• The DTI-BPS enjoins the consumers to scrutinize
the electric fan they buy for product reliability
and safety.
• An electric fan shall be marked as the example
below:

products passed the PNS requirements will be
issued with the PS license and ICC certificate by
the DTI-BPS.
• Only manufacturers and importers with valid
licenses and certificates are allowed to use the
