Aim: The aim is to create a 10-15 minute short film about a 3rd
year criminology student who needs to solve the recent
murders that have happened in the town.

Target Audience: The target audience for this short film would be teenagers
to young adults, but after I have conducted more research
(E.g. Psychographics), then I will know more clearly what
my target audiences is.

Project Title: ‘The Young Detective’

Aim of Project: The aim of this project will be to explore my directing and
script writing abilities. These are the skills I would like to
explore and grow the most. I have chosen these two
abilities because I love the script writing process and
coming up with ideas for short films. I have also chosen
directing because of how inventive and creative you can be
with certain shots and scenes.

This project will also build on all my work from the last 2
years of doing my TV and Film Extended Diploma. The
main units I will be building on will be:
1. Unit 1: Pre-Production
2. Unit 6: Critical Analysis
3. Unit 16: Film and Video Editing
4. Unit 22: Single Camera Techniques
5. Unit 24: Writing for Television and Video
6. Unit 26: Film Studies
Other units will play a part, but not as big as, these other
units.

Unit 1: Pre-Production – To make an effective FMP (Final

Major Project) I will need to carefully and comprehensively
plan this short film down to it’s tiniest detail.
Unit 6: Critical Analysis – To plan the pre-production stage
carefully and comprehensively, throughout this entire
process I will need to critically analysis everything that I do
to make sure that this project does not go off track.

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing – This unit will become
more apparent when I go into my post-production stage.

Unit 22: Single Camera Techniques – This project will be a

single camera production. So, everything that I have learnt
in this unit will become very important when planning and
shooting my short film.

Unit 24: Writing for Television and Video – This unit along
with critical analysis will be important when script writing
because I will need to make sure that my script is the best
it can be with no/hardly any plot holes etc.

Unit 26: Film Studies – The film studies unit will come in
very handy when planning, writing and shooting this short
film (There are other processes that this will apply to also).
With the film studies unit, I can take what I have learnt for
research. I can analysis Tv series and Movies by analysing
the structuralism in them, I can see if they have certain
theories in them etc. I can then apply this to my own film if
needed.

Initial Ideas, Research and The genre for my short film is going to be crime drama
Resources: because I feel like I can explore the themes of moving on
and how by not moving on with your life it can slowly start
to take over and become an obsession. Crime dramas
explore those sorts of themes of people feeling lost, people
doing stuff they wouldn’t normally do with more research I
can find out how to do that more effectively and apply it to
my own short film.

The research I will need to undertake would be analysing

Tv shows (NCIS), Movies (Sherlock Holmes), Video games
(Hidden Agenda), Novels (Murder on the Orient Express).
This type of research can give me a greater understand for
the genre and its codes and conventions. I will also be
looking at different genres of Tv and Film as well, just to
know how I can incorporate the things I love about those
movies/Tv shows into my short film. Other types of
research I will be undertaking are:
1. Survey’s
2. Focus groups
3. Physiography’s
4. Mosaic audiences
5. Codes and Conventions Research
6. BBFC (Age Calcification)
This is just some of the researching methods I shall be
undertaking for my short film.
Media, Media Forms, For my short film, I shall be apart of all the stages of the
Technologies and Time-scale: production process (Pre-Production, Production and Post
Production), I will also be apart of the distribution and
exhibition of this short film also.

Pre-Production: This process involves my initial planning

which is research, scripting, storyboarding, location
scouting etc.

Production: This is where I carry out the filming of my short

filming with my cast and crew. This can only be achieved
once my pre-production is all planned and ready to go.

Post-Production: Once filming’s all out of the way, I can

start to edit this short film using the adobe creative suite.

Distribution: Once the film is complete I will need an

audience to show this to, so I will need to design a
marketing campaign to get people to watch my film.

Exhibition: The final product/short film shall be uploaded to

YouTube for the world to see.

Under this you shall find a proposal sheet explaining the

time scale of this project: (Next page)

Evaluation and Review: While I am making this short film, I shall be meeting up with
my tutor to discuss the development of my Idea’s and
reviewing it that way. However, I shall be reviewing my
work every couple of days just to make sure that I am on
the right track. At the end of this project I shall be
evaluating my work in a Viva Voce to my tutor.
