Marketing Briefing : Cylon Marketing Department, 9th August, 2005
A number of ACSIs have requested guidance from Cylon regarding the upgrade path from
UCC4 to UC32.net. In particular there are very many existing UCC4 end users who are
extending sites and ACSIs are looking for guidance from Cylon.
This marketing briefing looks at the reasons for migrating an existing UCC4 site to UC32.net
and outlines the recommended solution where both controller families co-exist at the same end
user.
Cylon Recommendation
The clear recommendation from Cylon is that all new projects should use the UnitronUC32
family of controllers. This provides the best solution for end users and the lowest full life cost.
Selection of UnitronUC32 for new projects including extensions to existing sites provides the
longest useful life as it is based on a current technology platform.
Environmental Factors
The Reduction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) means that all products sold from
1st July 2006 must be ROHS compliant. Older ranges of Unitron products will have to be
reduced to meet this requirement. Use of UnitronUC32 range ensures the site will be using
products that are full compliant with this directive.
Benefits of UnitronUC32
• A faster communication solution
• Faster controller family
• Future proof with TCP/IP networking
• Major new features only in UC32 family, embedded web, BACnet/IP
• UEC 6 can reduce engineering time by up to 40%
• Gradual migration of sites ensures that system never reaches end of useful life
requiring major re-tender
• All new developments based on UC32 family
• All marketing and sales effort focused on UC32 family
Solution
The UnitronUC32 BMS solution is backward compatible with Unitron 2000 as per the solution
diagram below. It is recommended that new projects are implemented with UC32 family of
controllers. Existing UCC4 ARCnet network can co-exist along side the new UC32.net TCP/IP
network. The overall customer installation can be managed from the Unitron Command Centre
software. In this scenario the UCC4 network and UC32.net network are in effect set up a
separate ‘sites’.
Over time UCC4 controllers can be replaced with UC32.net controllers if required. However it
would be preferable to replace all UCC4 controllers in the same physical site at the same time
due to the site re-configuration required.

Potential Issues
In the solution model above the UCC4.net controllers are on a separate “Site 1” and will not
be able to share globals directly with the UC32.net controllers on “Site2”. If there is a
requirement to share globals then modbus, OSnodes or some other means is required.
In terms of set-up you should have the UC32.net controllers (Site2) as the default site and
selected for scanning alarms. The UCC4.net controllers (Site 1) is the local site connected via
serial connection.
If Weblink Server is used you can connect to multiple sites on demand. However only the site
currently connected will be scanned for alarms.
If you are migrating an existing UCC4 site to UC32.net then you replace the communication
controllers and set the new UC32.nets to the same address as the old controllers. Site
organiser can be used to download configurations. Additional technical information is
referenced below.
Commercial Information
The Cylon Price List 2005 has a special upgrade offer for Unitron Command Centre.
Adding UC32s to an existing WN3000 site: There is an upgrade cost for all
upgrades from previous WN3000 software version to the Unitron Command Centre
(UCC) or Unitron Weblink of 60% of the list price of the new software less your
standard discount. The WN3000 dongle (Rainbow Dongle) must be returned to get
the Unitron Command Centre software (Hasp dongle) or Unitron Weblink software
at the upgrade price. If the existing WN3000 dongle is retained then no upgrade
price is available and the Unitron Command Centre software will have to be
purchased at its normal list price.
