HIS LIFE AND \i\'ORK

THE easter11 part of Spain-tl1e warlike Catalo11ia and the fer·

tile Vale11cia-have always been ricl1 in thc tale11t, bt1t never i11 the
genius, of art. Still less seldom 11as the central or 111ountai11ous re
gion produced any pai11ter of 11ote. If 've are to look for the flower
of tl1e great Spanisl1 111asters i11 art, we sl1all find tl1c111 in the su1111y
soutl1, i11 brigl1t and l1appy Ar1dalusia. And if 've are seeking for
one in vvhon1, more tl1an in any otl1er, tl1is A11dalt1sian spirit is em
bodied, we shall find l1im in l\tlurillo.
Both on his father1s a11d his motl1er,s side, Bartolon1e Esteban
1urillo came from a family long settled in i\.ndalusia. We are igno
rant of the exact date of his birtl1, but '''e kno'v that l1e \lvas baptized on
Mo11day, J anuary r , r 6 r 8, i11 the Churcl1 of St. 1 agdalena, in Seville,
as the son of Gaspar Esteban l\llurillo and 1laria Perez. 1Ylt1rillo's
father died, probably in 1627, and his mother on J ant1ary 8, 1628;
so that already at the age of ten Murillo 'vas an orpha11. His gt1ar
dia11, the surgeon J uan Augustin Lazares, married to A11na Murillo,
took the boy under his care, a11d, because of 11.is aptitude for dra\iV
ing, sent l1im to study witl1 J t1ar1 del Castillo. This artist, thougl1
he came fron1 a l1igl1, artistic Sevillian family, vvas a painter of sn1all
atta · 1ments. Still, he vvas a good teacl1er, accon1plisl1ed in draugl1ts
manship and co111position and, as his religious paintings sl1ovv, a
genuine Scvillian in J1is lively a11d graceful expressio11. He be
longed to tl1at company of later Spanish ro111anticists \vl10 i111itated
the great Italian 111asters, and 'vho, \Vitl1out e\rer J1aving been in
Italy, copicd their \vorks from etcl1ings and engravings. In tl1is
respect, Castillo \vas a follo,ver of l1is contemporary, .T ua11 de Ruelas,
vvho must be considered as the founder of thc national Sevillian art
of the seventeenth ccntury. lt is evident, from tl1c carlicst extant
vvorks by I\llurillo, that tl1e young artist, like many of l1is contem
poraries, had been an earnest student of tl1e paintings by Rt1elas;
