The Bias is acceptable if zero falls within the lower and upper confidence level.

BIAS STUDY RESULTS: GAGE PASSES

Conducting the Study:
1) Obtain a sample and establish its reference value relative to a traceable standard. For linear measurements
this may be calibrated gage blocks.
2) Have single appraiser measure the sample 12 times. Input results in the designated area above.
3) Input the total variation (TV): use Tolerance/6 (USL-LSL/6) or expected process variation. The resulting %EV
(repeatability) should be below 30% with less than 10% preferred. See Chapter II, section D of MSA 4th Edition.
Results Analysis:
Graphical: Review the above histogram. Determine if any special causes or anomalies are present. Do you see a normal
bell-curve distribution. Are there any outliers?
Numerical: Examine the 95% confidence level of the Bias above. The Bias is acceptable if zero falls within the confidence
bounds around the bias value. The Lower Level must be less than or equal to zero. The Upper Level must be
greater than or equal to zero.

If the measurement system has non-zero bias (fails numberical analysis), try recalibrating the instrument.
