Silver Lakes Garden Club Meeting Minutes

March 7th, 2018

The meeting was called to order at 4:02 pm by Co-Chr. Margaret Weber.

23 members were in attendance. The minutes of 2/21/18, having been
distributed via email were approved. Pat Bradley, motion to approve, Gloria
Padula, second.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Chautzie Wood; Previous balance was $7,909.35. We

showed income of $470 (bake sale profit and memorial brick purchases) and
expenses of $307.16, leaving a cash balance in our account of $8072.19

OLD BUSINESS:
Tree Planting at DCH: Kathy Bisonic and Gail Miller reported that the new
pots in front of the DCH are now planted with palms and scarlet sage around
the base of the palm. Scott and his crew planted these containers at a cost of
$50 per pot.
Proposal to BOD for our front entrance project: Margaret Weber reported
that the BOD has approved our plan for enhancing the center island of the
park front entrance. Plans are going forward to improve the irrigation system
in this area prior to any planting improvements. The actual garden designs and
plantings will begin about October 15, when the Raakes will be present to
oversee this operation. A suggestion was made that we place a plaque in this
area recognizing this as a garden club initiative. Deep appreciation was
expressed for the careful oversight and attention that Margaret and Robert
have given this project.
Major Event, January 19th,2019: Pat Bradley has graciously offered to
chair this event and Gloria Padula volunteered to co-chair. Jolene Smith
volunteered as ticket/advertising chair. Mel Presgraves is working with
Bernwood Catering to establish a menu that they would deliver, that we as a
club would serve as well as provide dessert, and which would come in at a
cost no more than $15 a plate. Diane Schmaus is in touch with Debi Guthery to
provide two hours of entertainment at a cost figure of $550. Ms. Guthery is
willing to split her performance- one hour “Dusty Storm”, one hour 50's/60's.
(Giving rise to a possible theme of “A little bit country/a little bit rock and
roll!”)

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Watering Schedule/Planting update: Chautzie has emailed a revised
watering schedule. Members are reminded that if they cannot meet the time
their team leader has planned for watering, they are to notify their leader and
find a substitute. Chautzie asks for those members who will be in the park
during the months of November and December to notify her so she can create
a watering schedule for those months. It has become apparent that during the
dry season, the flowers planted in the window boxes at the Guard Shack need
more frequent attention. A suggestion was made that perhaps a micro
irrigation system could be considered for this area in the future. Claire and
Peggy purchased new plants for the front of the SCH and for the Silver, Happy
Valley and Diamond pools.
Bake Sale: Proceeds from our bake sale at Hot Dogs 2/20/18 was $138
and on 3/6/18, $164 for a total of $302 for our treasury.

position on the Education Committee. Our final educational event for this

gardens being featured. Refreshments will be served at several locations and
volunteer members will be present at each garden to assist as necessary.
Should we be faced with inclement weather, a cancellation alert will go out to
SLPOA at 1pm on Sunday.
Public Relations: Jolene recommends that this committee be disbanded
as our “brand” is firm. Members agreed.
