Assignment (2)

1- A smooth concrete pipe (1500 mm diameter) carries water from a reservoir

to an industrial treatment plant 2.8 km away and discharges it into a ground
tank. The pipe begins 2.0 m below the surface of the reservoir and runs
downhill on 1/100 slope. Determine the mass flow rate if the water
temperature is 370, neglect the minor losses.

2- A horizontal, commercial steel (new) pipe, 1.4 m in diameter, carries 4.5

m3/sec of water at 250 C. Calculate the pressure change in the pipe per
kilometer length.

3- Discuss in details the modeling of hydraulic transmission lines assumed

single lumped parameters model. State clearly your assumptions and derive
the transfer matrix relating the inlet and outlet pressures and flow rates. Find
also the equations relating inlet and outlet pressures and flow rates at two
extremities of a closed end pipe and open end to atmosphere .

4- When the pump in Figure draws 220 m3/h of water at 20°C from the
reservoir, the total friction head loss is 5 m. The flow discharges through a
nozzle to the atmosphere. Estimate the pump power in kW delivered to the
water.

5- The pipe flow in Fig. fills a cylindrical tank as shown. At time t = 0, the
water depth in the tank is 40 cm. Estimate the time required to fill the
remainder of the tank.

7- water at 10°C pumped at 100 m3/s , pipe friction losses = 34 velocity head
and pump efficiency 75% .Compute pump power to derive it.

8- A 4O-m-long, 12-mm-diamer.er pipe with a friction factor of 0.020 is used to

siphon 30 ·C water from a tank as shown in Fig. P8. Determine the
maximum value of h allowed if there is to be no cavitation within the hose.
Neglect minor losses.

Problem due
Water at 210 C is transported through a 400-m-long uniform wrought iro
pipe with head loss of 9.3 m. determine the diameter of the pipe that will
convey 13 L/sec.
