Assignment (3)

1- A buried concrete pipe (n = 0.018) of unknown length needs to be replaced. The

1.0m conduit carries water between two reservoirs that differ in elevation by
10m. If the flow rate = 1.2 m3/sec how much new pipe is needed?

2- The elevation difference between two reservoirs 7000 m apart is 74 m.

a) Compute the flow rate if a 300 mm commercial steel (CHW=150) pipeline
connects the reservoirs. Compare your direct computation solution with that
given by the solution chart.
b) Compute the flow rate if two 200 mm pipes commercial steel pipeline are
used instead.

3- As shown in Fig. P3, water flows from one tank to another through a short pipe
whose length is n times the pipe diameter. Head losses occur in the pipe and at
the entrance and exit. Determine the maximum value of n if the major loss is to
be no more than 10% of the minor loss and the friction factor is 0.02.

4- Water at 10°C is pumped from a lake as shown in Fig. P4. If the flow rate is ,
0.011 m3/s. what is the maximum length inlet pipe L , that can be used without
cavitation occurring?

5- Water flows through the pipe system shown in Fig. P5 at a rate of 0.30 ft3/s. The
pipe diameter is 2 in., and its roughness is 0.002 in. The loss coefficient for each
of the five filters is 6.0, and all other minor losses are negligible. Determine the
power added to the water by the pump if the pressure immediately before the
pump is to be the same as that immediately after the last filter. The length of the
pipe between these two locations is 80 ft.

Problem due

In problem 2, use Manning (n = 0.012) for commercial steel to compute the

flow rate. Compare the results from these two empirical formulas [Hazen-
William and Manning], to that of Darcy-Weisbach (roughness height = 0.048
mm).
