Algebra II
School Year 2010-2011
Course Description
Students in Algebra II are assumed to have mastered those concepts
outlined in the Algebra I. Students study advanced algebraic concepts
through functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex
numbers, matrices, and sequences and series. Emphasis is placed on
practical application and modeling. Oral and written communication
concerning the language of algebra, logic of procedures, and
interpretation of results are studied. Students study graphing
functions using a transformational approach, including translation,
reflections, dilation, and rotation to general a Αfamily of graphs≅ from a
given graph. They study the close relationship between algebraic
concepts and graphic representations of functions. They also vary the
coefficients and constants and an equation, observe the changes in the
graph of an equation, and formulate generalizations that can be
applied to many graphs.
Specific Objectives:
Daily Objectives will be listed on the board for the students to see each
day before class. The objectives will list what we will be covering in
class on that particular day.
For Algebra II, students will start with a review of Basic Algebra 1
Equations, Inequalities, and Properties; Solving Absolute Value
Equations and Inequalities and will then be tested on their knowledge
of the content. Next we will go into Linear Relations and Functions
which will then be followed by Systems of Equations; Systems of
Inequalities and Linear Programming.
We will also spend some time on Matrices; Polynomials; Radical
Expressions and Equations; Complex Numbers; and Quadratic
Functions.
Depending on time and how well the students are grasping the
material we may touch some on the following:
Polynomial Functions, Conics, Rational Expressions, and Inverse
Variation
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions; Sequences and Series;
Permutations and Combinations; and Statistics.
At the end of the semester we will review and prepare for the
Algebra II TCAP test which will be given on or around December 10-14
Materials
Text: Algebra 2 (Glencoe) which is provided by the school system.
Practice Workbook will be used as deemed necessary to supplement
text.
Graphing Calculators are provided by the school for use in class and on
the TCAP Test.
Students should purchase or already have a graphing calculator for
their personal use outside of school and for future math classes.
