ACTIVE SENTENCES AND PASSIVE SENTENCES

Sentences can be active or passive. Therefore, tenses also have "active forms"
and "passive forms." You must learn to recognize the difference to successfully
speak English.
Active Form
In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence
and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active.
Passive Form
In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the
sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of
the sentence. You can use the passive form if you think that the thing receiving
the action is more important or should be emphasized. You can also use the
passive form if you do not know who is doing the action or if you do not want to
mention who is doing the action.

a. ACTIVE: Bob mailed the package. a, and b have the same meaning.
b. PASSIVE: The package was mailed
by Bob.

c. Bob mailed the package.

S v o
In c: the object of an active sentence

S v “by-
phrase”
d. ACTIVE: The teacher corrects our FORM OF ALL PASSIVE VERBS:
homework.
e. PASSIVE: Our homework is corrected BE + PAST PARTICIPLE
by the teacher.
BE can be in any of its forms: am. Is, are,
was, were, has been, have been, will be,
etc.

THE PAST PARTICIPLE follows BE. For

regular verbs, the past participle ends in –
ed (mailed, corrected) some past
participles are irregular.

GRAMMAR
MODAL VERB
HAVE TO

We often use have to to say that something is obligatory, for example:

 Children have to go to school.
 Jenny has to wear jeans and jacket.
 Simon has to work 8 hours.

Structure of Have to

Have to is often grouped with modal auxiliary verbs for convenience, but in fact
it is not a modal verb. It is not even an auxiliary verb. In the have to structure,
"have" is a main verb. The structure is:
Subject + auxiliary verb + have + infinitive (with to)

auxiliary main verb infinitive (with

subject
verb have to)

+ She Has to work.

have the
- I do not to see
doctor.

? Do you Have to go to school?

10TH GRADE

ENGLISH III
PERIOD

Use of Have to
In general, have to expresses impersonal obligation. The subject of have
to is obliged or forced to act by a separate, external power (for example,
the Law or school rules). Look at these examples:

 In France, you have to drive on the right.

 In England, most schoolchildren have to wear a uniform.
 John has to wear a tie at work.

We can use have to in all tenses, and also with modal auxiliaries. We
conjugate it just like any other main verb. Here are some examples:

auxiliary main verb

subject verb have infinitive

past simple I Had to work yesterday.

present simple I Have to work today.

future simple I will Have to work tomorrow.

present
She is Having to wait.
continuous

to
present perfect We have Had the time.
change

modal (may) They may Have to do it again.

Read the text. What is it about?

a. Child labor in the U.S. today.

b. Child labor in Third World Countries
c. Child Labor in the U.S. in the past.

In the U.S. in the 19th century many young children worked to support their
families. Children worked in factories, farms, mines, or in the homes of rich
families. Read about twelve- year- old Hannah Wheatley’s life as a maid in
Boston in 1832.

I start work at 5:30 a.m. and I finish at midnight, I have to

clean the kitchen, wash the floors, and lay and clear the
table in the dining room upstairs. I don’t have to cook,
Mrs. Harper, the cook, prepares the meals, but I have to
help her and after every meal I have to wash the dishes. I
hate washing the dishes it takes a long time and
everything has to be perfect. Last week I broke an
expensive crystal glass and I had to pay for it. I work
downstairs in the kitchen most of the time. I don’t see the
family who live in the house- that’s Mr. Henderson and his
wife and children. I only see Mrs. Harper and Mrs.
Granger he’s the head servant – and the other servants.
There are strict rules in the house. We must wear a
uniform and we must call Mrs. Granger “Sir”, and Mrs.
Harper “Ma’am”. We can only speak when they ask a
question.
I miss my family. I only go home one Sunday a month. I
hate going back to the house to work; but the next day
I’m happy again because I know I can send money to help
my family.

READING

NEW TO AMERICA

Nancy was new to America. She came to America speaking only her native

language. She brought her 8-year-old son with her. He was all she had in the

world.

They found an apartment in Arcadia. They were there for only two months when

a neighbor's dog jumped over the fence. The dog ran toward Nancy's son.

Nancy put her body in between the dog and her son. The dog stopped when it

saw Nancy screaming at it. She was going to punch it in the nose. The dog

turned around.

Shaking, Nancy took her son upstairs. They stayed in the apartment all

weekend. Then Nancy found another apartment, close to the school that her

son was going to attend.

She and her son walked everywhere. One day her son started coughing badly.

He had an asthma attack. All the walking was making his asthma worse.
