(NRS 221 Summary - 03/11/18)

The types of patients I cared for this term was very diverse. I cared for cardiac patients in REU, laboring mother’s in
the FBC, a pediatric patient with an appendicitis receiving TPN and lipids on MCU, as well as, OR and Cath lab
patients. I spent clinical hours on MCU and PSU caring for two patients at a time which has helped me develop my
time management and prioritization skills even more. My clinical in the ED was the first time I was able to care for a
patient diagnosed with a mental health disorder, schizophrenia. I observed a gastrojejunostomy surgery in the OR
this term and participated in the pre-op, intra-op, and post-operative care of the patient. This term was the first
time that I worked in the ICU and I found the experience to be challenging and very interesting. My favorite clinical
this term was while working in the FBC caring for a laboring mother and the opportunity to observe an emergency
cesarean section in the OR. This was a unique surgery involving the removal of a large, ovarian cyst and was very
interesting. I also participated in the APGAR scoring and NB assessment.
Some of the skills I accomplished this term include the administration of sublingual medication, administration using
a prefilled dosage system / CarpuJect, and medication via a nasogastric tube. Other skills include: assessment of
tachycardia, rhonchi, and administering oxygen via simple facemask. I irrigated a nasogastric tube and
demonstrated appropriate assessments, demonstrated obtaining a clean catch urine specimen. I placed an external
monitor on a prenatal client in labor, identified: FHR, fetal heart pattern, and uterine activity. I completed a NB
assessment, focused BP assessment of upper and lower extremities and hearing testing.
Activities participated in on campus include: graduation preparation meetings, mentoring of first year nursing
students and participating in class evaluation surveys.
