Lesson Type 1: Oracy

Time Component Script

3 min Introduce Oracy Skill & Good Morning Rocketeers! Today we are going to work on
Key vocabulary making our classroom discussions even better. We have already
learned one of the discussion roles: the Instigator, or the person
who starts the conversation for the group. But in order to have a
successful discussion, there must be many voices and opinions,
not just one. Today we are going to learn about some of the
other roles in a discussion.

Some of the other roles are

- The Summarizer. Do you remember what a summary
is? It is when you tell all of the most important
information in a short, easy to understand statement.
The Summarizer is someone who summarizes or
restates what the other people in the group are saying.
(Teacher models what a Summarizer might sound like,
using anchor chart/sentence starters).
- The Builder is someone who builds on what has already
been said. That means that they add to it so that the
discussion can keep growing and getting better. So if
someone said the best David Shannon book is No,
David!, the Builder might say “____ made a good point
when they said No, David! was the best David Shannon
book. Would anyone else like to add on to that
comment.” The Builder takes the conversation and
builds on to it so that it can keep going.
- The Challenger is someone who questions another’s
reasoning or evidence. So if someone in the discussion
said No David was the best David Shannon book, the
Challenger might say “Can you explain why you think
that? What is your evidence?” The Challenger’s job is
to make sure that everyone in the discussion is
explaining their reasoning and giving their best
argument.

10 min Practice Activity We have introduced a lot of new roles for our discussions! Now

success (what
should T look for) Directions:
❏ CFUs & Prompts - Teacher assigns roles and quickly goes over class
to Support Ss discussion norms. (If your classroom uses visual
markers to assign/differentiate the roles, pass these out
and explain how they are used to the class).
- Teacher presents to topic to students (You can use
discussion prompts from a previous Oracy lesson, or
give students a new prompt related to a schoolwide
focus or class work. This would be a great time to tie in
a social skill your class has been focusing on! You can
discuss why it is important to share/etc.)
- Students practice having a discussion using their roles.
Teacher supports as needed.
- If time, students break into groups, and have a
discussion in small groups.

CFU:
- What is the Builder’s job? Why is the Builder important
to the disucssion?
- What is the Challenger’s job? Why is the Challenger
important to the discussion?
- What is the Summarizer’s job? Why is the Summarizer
important to the discussion?
- Why is it important that we assign roles in a discussion?
