Time to give
With Autumn comes Easter, and with Easter comes
the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
The annual fundraising event will be held on March 30;
with members of the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club already
rattling their tins and calling for local volunteers.
Bacchus Marsh area manager, David Atterbury said
every donation, and every minute of voluntary work,
helps contribute to the community’s total yearly
donation.
“Anyone with spare time, whether it’s in the days
leading up to Good Friday, or on the day itself, is urged
to assist in raising money for a good cause,” he said.
“Members of the Lions Club will be rattling
our collection tins outside of shopping centres,
supermarkets and newsagents in the week leading up
to Good Friday, and we hope to have around 30 to 50
volunteers turn up to various intersections on the day
to collect as many donations as possible”.
In 2017, Bacchus Marsh and surrounding communities
raised over $30,000 for the Good Friday Appeal.
Lions Club volunteers will be at the Bacchus Marsh
fire station to collect donations from 9am on March 30.
“However, if you are going away, there will be plenty
of opportunities to donate beforehand,” Mr Atterbury
said.
“We have about 40 different local businesses around
Bacchus Marsh who have the collection tins at their
front counter or desk, some leaving them there
throughout the whole year.
“We change them over on a required basis and to date
we’ve already collected about $8,000 for the year”.

Lady of the ‘white’ night

Two Moorabool artists are among
the impressive bill of talents at this
year’s White Night in Ballarat.
Ballan’s Lou Callow and Marlene
Gilson from Gordon will feature at
the all-night creative celebration, to
be held this Saturday March 17.
An LED animation of the Bunjil,
inspired by the artwork of Indig-
enous Auntie and elder Marlene,
will be a major highlight of the
regional program, which will
transform the main street of Bal-
larat through installations, light-
ing, exhibitions and interactive
performances.
Lou Callow, a founding member
of Wombats Regional Arts Net-
work, will feature her installation
titled Aussie Melting Pot in the
prominent Myer Shop windows
from 7pm.
The visual art installation is a mix-
ture of quirky icons, symbols and
rituals designed to evoke humour,
curiosity and stimuli for remem-
bering who we are and what it
means to be Australian.
“Myer is such an iconic depart-
ment store and was made inclusive
to rural Victoria; it is very special to
me to be able to display my art in
these windows,” Ms Callow said.
At a deeper level, Ms Callow said
she hopes to use her installation to
raise awareness and challenge the
observers’ commitment to Mother
Earth, their country and respect for
all living things.

A suspended driver who attend-
ed two collisions in a tow truck
has been fined $2,000.
Godwin Zerafa, who owns a
towing business, allegedly drove
the truck to a collision at Geelong-
Ballan Road on August 13 2017,
where police asked to see his li-
cense, which at the time was sus-
pended due to speeding.
A month later, Zerafa attended
another collision in Balliang East
and was recognised by the same
police officer.
He told police he drove the truck
because he “had no choice”.
Zerafa appeared in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates’ Court on Fri-
day March 9 charged with drive
whilst authorised suspended.
The court heard the accused
often received help running the
business from his wife and em-
ployees, however sometimes did
not have enough staff for all jobs,
meaning he had to attend to colli-
sions himself, despite not having
a driver’s license.
Magistrate Robinson said al-
though he understands the in-
convenience of not being able to
drive, it was nobody’s fault except
Zerafa himself.
The accused was fined $2,000.
“You can expect a community
corrections order or prison next
time,” Magistrate Robinson said.

Dear Editor,
I write to provide an addi-
tional comment in regard to
the recent front page story,
‘Charities shine brighter’
(MN 3 March).
Apple 98.5 FM was delight-
ed and very appreciative
to receive a $1,000 donation
from the Marsh Rodders
recently.
It was totally unexpected
and couldn’t have come at a
better time for us. The Rod-
ders asked Apple 98.5 FM
to do an outside broadcast
from their Swap Meet last
October.
We had a great day and
were able to trial our limited,
work in progress, outside
broadcast equipment.
In June last year we relo-
cated to new premises at
the Darley Community Hub
where our members spent
the next few months build-
ing a new studio. Whilst
both projects were done
with volunteer labour, their
costs were very difficult for
us to bear.
The Rodders kind donation
will assist greatly in defray-
ing some of the costs of both
projects. We look forward to
working with the Rodders
on future Swap Meets and
getting out into the com-
munity for more outside
broadcasts.

garding the Bacchus Marsh-
Geelong Road. If you have
travelled this road you will
understand the need for an
upgrade of this road. It ap-
pears that at this time all
VicRoads is prepared to pro-
vide is printed below:
- Flexible safety barrier to
the centreline to maintain
100 km/h speed limits.
- Flexible safety barriers
along the edge line at high
risk locations.
- Improvements to high risk
intersections.
- Audio tactile line marking
(rumble strips) to the edge
and centreline.
- Overtaking lanes where
appropriate.

In our opinion the road is
too narrow; the tarmac sur-
face is extremely degraded
but the biggest risk to safety
is the undulating nature of
the road. When you look
to the horizon it appears
there is no oncoming traffic
only to have a car ‘pop’ out
of a dip in the road; it is no
wonder there are so many
head on collisions. There are
also many people not realis-
ing this danger who pass
on double lines. With the
increase in use of this road
(Manorvale, Werribee, Melt-
on, Lara, and Corio, Bacchus
Marsh all heading to this
road) it should be divided to
a two lane carriageway. The
road easement is certainly
wide enough.
Also, at this time of year
there are many large, fast,
grain trucks using the road
thus increasing the danger.

As a neighbour close to the
recently constructed, and
completed Yaloak South
wind farm, I am disap-
pointed with the response
from Pacific Hydro when I
told them about noise gen-
erated from their turbines.
This noise can be described
as a hum, like a refrigerator,
switched on and off every
second or so, as well as a
swooshing sound, that reso-
nates through my house.
This noise is much more no-
ticeable at night and is dis-
rupting my sleep. At a recent
meeting with them they in-
dicated that I should consult
with a medical professional,
namely a sleep specialist.
I have never experienced

A racecourse at Lal Lal - who would have thought

It is a surprisingly little-
known fact that Lal Lal was
once the toast of the country
racing world.
In 1888, it is estimated that
about 40,000 people arrived
in Lal Lal by the specially
built rail line, by horse and
cart, or simply by riding a
horse or walking, for the fa-
mous New Year’s Day picnic
race meet.
Second only to the Mel-
bourne Cup, for about 10
years either side of that peak
event, the numbers were
steady at around 20,000
annually.
It helped that prior to 1900,
the Falls was one of the emi-
nent tourist attractions in
the colony of Victoria, and
the Lal Lal New Year’s Day
race meets were known as
the Melbourne Cup of the
country.
Not only was the day about
the races and socialising, but
it would also boast merry-go-
rounds, side show spruikers,
and ‘freak show’ attractions
on the day.

Cauchi and Michael Guiney
have published a not-for-
profit history book covering
not only the social history
of the races, but also the Lal
Lal Falls, and the specially
built branch line railway that
transported the tens of thou-

year, for the 75 years it ran.
“The period covered is 1864-
1940, but we do incorporate
an epilogue on what remains
today in this sleepy hamlet
that once boasted numerous
hotels and shops and was a
very busy place,” Mr Cauchi
told the Moorabool News.
In researching the book, no
stone was left unturned to
uncover the secrets of the
falls, races, and rail line.
“Hundreds of hours at the
Public Record Office Victoria
for official Victorian Railways
records and relevant Land
files, numerous Victorian
Government publications
including the Vic Gazette,
and the State Library for the
various local and Melbourne
newspapers including The
Argus, The Age, The Ballarat
Courier, The Ballarat Evening
Post, The Ballarat Star, The
Ballan Times, The Geelong
Advertiser, just to name the
key ones,” Mr Cauchi said of
the research.
“In addition, we conducted
numerous interviews with
long-time residents and land-
owners like the Diamonds
and Robinsons. Pauline
Holloway (Lal Lal) and Peter
Griffiths (Buninyong), both
local historians, were a sig-
nificant help and both are
acknowledged in the book.”
A number of factors com-
bined to see the end of the
races in the mid-1940s, in-
cluding a drought that dried
up the spectacular falls, and
eventually, the rail line was
removed and the land sold.
Sadly, the falls went into
decline as a tourist attrac-
tion in the 1990s following
the deaths of two students in
a rock fall at the site, and the
end of school visits is thought
to be one of the reasons be-
hind why the history of the
falls and the race meets is not
widely known today.

the wrong year for the peak

time is being kept alive by the
book, which compliments an
already published book by
the authors, on the former
racecourse rail line to Bunga-
ree, and a book on the race-
course line to Burrumbeet is

the only other two racecourse
rail lines ever built in Victoria
aside from the Flemington
line.

The icing is on the cake

A few weeks back this newspaper
received a letter to the editor from
a man from the Minerals Council
of Australia. I noted it in one of my
articles. I have since found (The
Saturday Paper, Jan 27, 2018) that
one third of Australia’s Mineral
Council is foreign owned. One
third of this body that continually
challenges the science of climate
disintegration and calls for more
and more coal mining and selling
by Australia is not even Australian
owned. A third of this body
which wants to silence those of
us Australians who want stronger
action on climate are not even
from our country. And our federal
government sides with them and
against its own people.
Meanwhile, the hottest period
on record has been officially
confirmed, with the world
experiencing its hottest five-years
from 2013 through 2017, according
to new climate data released
recently. This record is part of
a sharp, long-term upswing in
global temperatures, with 17 out
of the 18 hottest years on record all
occurring in this century. And we
still export coal. And governments,
at state and federal level, support
this crime. Who will be around to
take our government to court in
the years ahead?
In Australia, we are seeing the
effects of intensifying climate
disintegration first hand. We’ve
seen records reach disappointing
new heights in just 12 months, with
more than 260 heat and low rainfall
records smashed throughout one
season (winter) alone.
We have been touched by soaring

referred to our recent weather as
‘very unusual’.
I will conclude this opinion
piece with some more from
David Wallace-Wells called The
Uninhabitable Earth - Famine,
economic collapse, a sun that cooks
us: What climate change could
wreak — sooner than you think by
David Wallace-Wells (New York

“Even when we train our eyes on
climate change, we are unable to
comprehend its scope. This past
winter, a string of days 60 and 70
degrees warmer than normal baked
the North Pole, melting the permafrost
that encased Norway’s Svalbard seed
vault — a global food bank nicknamed
“Doomsday,” designed to ensure
that our agriculture survives any
catastrophe, and which appeared to
have been flooded by climate change
less than ten years after being built.”
“The Doomsday vault is fine, for now:
The structure has been secured and the
seeds are safe. But treating the episode
as a parable of impending flooding
missed the more important news. Until
recently, permafrost was not a major
concern of climate scientists, because,
as the name suggests, it was soil that
stayed permanently frozen. But Arctic
permafrost contains 1.8 trillion tons
of carbon, more than twice as much as
is currently suspended in the Earth’s
atmosphere. When it thaws and is
released, that carbon may evaporate as
methane, which is 34 times as powerful
a greenhouse-gas warming blanket as
carbon dioxide when judged on the
timescale of a century; when judged
on the timescale of two decades, it is
86 times as powerful. In other words,
we have, trapped in Arctic permafrost,
twice as much carbon as is currently
wrecking the atmosphere of the planet,
all of it scheduled to be released at a
date that keeps getting moved up.”
“Maybe you know that already —
there are alarming stories in the news
every day, like those, last month, that
seemed to suggest satellite data showed
the globe warming since 1998 more
than twice as fast as scientists had
thought. Or the news from Antarctica
this past May, when a crack in an ice
shelf grew 11 miles in six days, then
kept going; the break now has just three
miles to go — by the time you read this,
it may already have met the open water,
where it will drop into the sea one of the
biggest icebergs ever, a process known
poetically as “calving.”
And it seems Cape Town, South
Africa (population 3.75 million),
will run out of water in April.

to the Little River pub for
dinner on 20 October 2017,
Cameron was the desig-
nated driver. They arrived
back in Bacchus Marsh
around midnight and had
been drinking. Cameron
was alleged to have found
a piece of wood in the van
and Love proceeded to open
the passenger sliding door,
smashing at least five parked
vehicles’ mirrors, causing
damage to numerous cars, as
they drove around the Mad-
dingley area. CCTV footage
was obtained from a nearby
hotel.
Two days later, 22 October,
in the same white van both
the accused were driving on
the Western Freeway in the
vicinity of Pentland Hills
when they threw items at a

thrown and broke the wind-
screen. The prosecution
said Love was co-operative
and agreed he should have
stopped the co-accused but

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics
State Championships
Over the weekend 16 athletes
represented the Bacchus Marsh
Centre at the State Little Athletics
Championships held at Lakeside
Stadium.  Bacchus Marsh had a
sensational weekend winning 6 Gold
medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.
In very warm conditions on Day 1 of
competition Nelson Banigo won 2 Gold medals.  In the Under
9 70 metres final, Nelson crossed the finish line first in a time
of 9.98 seconds. After a dominating 28.57 secs performance
in his 200m heat, Nelson returned to the track for his final
and claimed his second Gold medal for the day.  Both these
performances are pending Victorian Records.  Luatangi
Haunga threw a massive PB in the Under 9 Discus and
claimed a Gold medal with a winning performance of 24.97
metres.  Old brother Matai Haunga also threw a PB in the
Discus and won the Silver medal in the Boys Under 11 event.
Day 2 of competition saw conditions a little cooler but
quite blustery.  Nelson Banigo was once again outstanding
on the track and claimed another 2 Gold medals for the
Championships.  Nelson stormed home in his 100 metre heat
in a time of 13.80 seconds and returned for the 100m final later
in the morning to record another outstanding performance
and pending State Record. After the lunch break Nelson ran
his 400 metre heat cruising to victory.  In the final race of the
day, Nelson lined up for his 400 metre final and 8th race for
the weekend, although extremely exhausted, Nelson backed
up and won his fourth State Title.  In the Under 9 Shot Put
Luantangi Haungi led for the entire competition and claimed
his second Gold medal and State Title with a PB performance
of 8.29 metres.  Alex Lloyd jumped a PB in the Under 10 High
Jump to win back to back State Bronze medals with a leap of
1.30 metres.
The athletes recorded some amazing results and should
be extremely proud of their performances at this level of
competition.  Whilst some athletes participated in their
first State Championships, we had 5 athletes, Solomon
Miesen, Kirsty Bresnan, Kayla Downes, Olivia Way and
Eliza Schembri, compete in their final Little Athletics State
Champs.
Next Saturday Little Aths will return to Masons Lane
Reserve for last meet prior to the Centre Championships on
March 24.

Ballan lost the toss and bowled first, Tim Landt put in a great
opening spell picking up two wickets. When Ben Loughnane
and Hayden Micallef came on together they bowled an
excellent spell of bowling both picking up three wickets. The
bowlers were well supported by the fielders holding their
catches with wicket keeper Jack McGregor being the stand
out with four catches. Ballan had 10 overs to bat the first day
and struggled against some brilliant bowling finishing the
day at 5/12. On the Sunday Ballan slowly started to build
batting partnerships but were 8/35 when Dylan Graham
joined Noel Heafield at the crease and together they made a
partnership of 112 undefeated with Noel finishing on 88 not
out and Dylan on 35 not out, to steer the side to a great win
and put the team into the preliminary final next week.

Ballan lost the toss and were sent into bat; most of the
batsmen got starts but did not make the most of the
opportunity finishing the 1st day on 5/80 with George Muir
and Matthew Golding being the best batsmen on the first
day. When Ballan bowled on the Saturday the bowlers all put
in a great effort for little reward only picking up 3/87 at end
of the day, with Johnathan Horan the best bowler picking up
two wickets. On the Sunday morning all Ballan’s bowlers
once again bowled excellent spells and they got the rewards
to claim the remaining 7 wickets in 19 overs. James Childs
led the way picking up three wickets in the opening spell.
Daniel Pascoe’s catching was a stand out for the innings
with four catches. This left Ballan chasing 66 runs to get a
win; Noah Neumann led the way making 52 and was well
supported by all batsmen especially McKenzie Popple. The
win puts Ballan into the Grand Final next weekend.

Juniors grab finals berth

The Darley Cricket Club had
mixed success as the Ballarat Crick-
et Association started their finals
this past weekend, with both their
16 & Under and 14 & Under sides
winning through to Grand Finals,
but their senior Second XI snatched defeat from the jaws of
victory, going down to Ballarat-Redan by three wickets.
The 16 & Under side rode their undefeated season into a
dominant display in their semi-final matchup with Elaine at
the Darley Hub this past Saturday and Sunday, winning by
nine wickets.
After the Lions sent Elaine into bat, the opposition were
looking solid with the score on 3/64, before the Lions took
the last seven Elaine wickets for just 33 runs to be dismissed
for 97.
Hayden Nash was the main wicket-taker for Darley, return-
ing figures of 4/5 from 4.2 overs, with Ryan Densley taking
two wickets and one each for Ben Taylor, Regan King and
Jaylan Altay.
Darley wasted little time in chasing down Elaine’s total, in
large part to a 69 run opening partnership between Liam
Cornford (33) and Lane Havelberg, with Ryan Densley join-
ing Havelberg after Cornford’s dismissal to lead the Lions
into the Grand Final, with Havelberg finishing on 41 not out
and Densley 9 not out.
Darley will now play Buninyong in the Grand Final at White
Flat Reserve in Ballarat this Saturday and Sunday, with play
starting at 8:30am on both days.
It was a similar story for the Lions’ 14 & Under side, who de-
feated Mount Clear by four wickets in their Semi Final, and
will now face Ballarat-Redan in the Grand Final at Brown
Hill this weekend.
The Lions were made to work for their victory, with Mount
Clear making 9/183 from their 45 overs on Saturday morn-
ing, a formidable score. Brodie Ward led Darley’s bowling
brigade with 3/25 from his eight overs, with captain Aaron
Cadman and Will Johnson taking two wickets each and
Luke Hayward taking one.
A strong start with the bat was imperative, and that’s what
Darley received with a 58 run opening stand from Brodie
Ward and Rockey Hoey setting the tone for the innings.
Ward made 25 before his dismissal, with Hoey going on to
score an impressive 51, with seven boundaries, before retir-
ing, with Cadman (25) and Jyson Fawcett (47 not out) helping
Darley over the line and into next weekend’s Grand Final.
The premiership dreams of the Darley Cricket Club Second
XI have ended this past weekend, going down to Ballarat-
Redan in their Semi Final clash by three wickets .
Winning the toss and batting, the Lions got off to a solid
start, with Hayden Jamieson (23) and Jordan Monaghan (11)
combining for a 33 run opening stand, then after losing four
wickets for 28 runs, captain Marcus Ingvorsen (25) and Corey
Beaton (20) took the score to 91 before Beaton was dismissed,
then Ingvorsen’s dismissal soon after triggered another
small collapse, with the Lions plummeting to 8/99 before
Mitch Ward (31) provided some very handy lower order runs
before he was the last wicket to fall with the score on 138.
It looked for a while as this would be more than enough
runs, as Ballarat-Redan’s batsmen trod a well-worn path
between the Russell Square pavilion and the pitch as Dayle
Locke ran through the Two Swords top order, taking four
early wickets to have them teetering at 4/19, then when Co-
rey Beaton joined the action to trap Ballarat-Redan’s Justin
Marson LBW for two runs, the score slumped to 5/21 and the
Lions were rocking. Beaton struck again with the score on
49 to have victory well in sight, before Ballarat-Redan captain
Paul Aikman was joined at the crease by Simon Allan, with
the pair putting on 69 runs for the seventh wicket before
Allan was dismissed by Hayden Jamieson for 61, taking the
score to 7/118 and still giving Darley a big chance at victory.
Aikman’s son Ryan joined him at the crease and together
they took the Two Swords to victory, ending Darley’s season.

Cars rally in the bush

Round 1 of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship
(ARC) was held (March 3 & 4) in the Wombat State Forest,
just north of Ballan, for the second year in a row.
The Eureka Rally 2018 had a total of 16 special stages held
between the Wombat State Forest on Saturday and on Sunday
at the Ross Creek/Enfield forest areas.
The competition attracted some of the best rally drivers in the
country including previous ARC Champions Eli Evans, Harry
Bates and, last year’s Eureka Rally winner, Molly Taylor.
They headed a field of around 50 cars along with drivers
from the ARC2 and VRC (Victorian Rally Championship).

with spectator points 1 & 3 on the Bunding/Blakeville Road
and points 2 & 4 on Farm Road.
Both spectator points had numerous fans there to watch the
elite of the rally drivers pass through. The cars were about
an hour behind at point 2 due to someone being parked on
the track. That stage was very close to being cancelled due to
the stray car.
At the end of the first day Harry Bates was in first position
followed by Steve Glenney, Eli Evans and Lewis Bates.
(Lewis’ car was destroyed by fire last year on the Bunding/
Blakeville Rd stage). Molly Taylor, last year’s winner, came in
at 5th place after sustaining a flat tyre, which dropped her to
11th position and then had to fight her way back to 5th.
On the Sunday, the top five drivers maintained their overall
positions even though positions changed during the course
of the day.
Overall winner was Harry Bates having won 11 of 15 stages.
Steve Glenny in 2nd after a 10-year absence from driving and
stepping in from the co-drivers seat only this week. Third
placed Eli Evans finished 4th for heat 2 but had enough points
to take 3rd. Lewis Bates claimed 5th for day 2 but held onto
4th place overall. Molly Taylor came in 6th in heat two after
hitting a kangaroo and sustaining power steering damage,
and after repairs at the lunchtime service was able to get back
up to 5th place overall.
