The research work was performed so as to understand and also find the

correlation between academic performance of students and the usage of mobile

phone during class hours which is general believed to be an avenue of distractions
to students. The information from this work was carried out using structured
questionnaires administered to 45 students to get their individual views. In
addition 15 extensive interviews were done concurrently to have a grounded
knowledge of the students with the data gathered during the course of this study.
Our findings indicated that students are influenced negatively to a great extent by
the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music and others while
their academic activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study
discovered that the use of mobile phone is uncontrollable among students which
are the leading cause of poor academic performance among students.

According to (Bull & McCormick, 2012; Tao & Yeh, 2013) state that cell phone
exists continuously its rapid development, and it helps the student improved
their learning about technology. The students can easily access new information
and enhance their capability in interacting with teachers and fellow students. On
the contrary, (Linda Marchan, 2015) stated that cell phone can distract the
student during class time. They cannot focus on the discussion especially when
there is someone texting or calling to them.
Cell phones have become most popular technological advances for many
people throughout the world. The ability to keep in touch with family, business
associates and access email are only a few of the reasons for increasing
importance of cell phones. Today’s technically advanced cell phones are
capable of not only receiving and placing phone calls of their family and
friends. But today, many people are wanted to purchase the first cell phone.
When cell phones first introduced to the public they were expensive and some
even required a base unit that had to be transported along with the phone. Good
reception as a major problem. In general, early cell phones could only be used
in a certain area where a signal is particularly strong (Kingston, 2012).

The usage of Internet enabled mobile phones is a 21st century experience

which covers various operations. This research work examines phone usage
and identified the effects internet enabled mobile phones have on the
academic performance of students at the tertiary institutions using the
Federal Polytechnic students of Ilaro, Ogun State in Nigeria as a case
study. The research work was performed so as to understand and also find
the correlation between academic performance of students and the usage

In this study, we examined the impact of mobile phone usage,

during class lecture, on student learning. Participants in three

different study groups (control, low-distraction, and

high-distraction) watched a video lecture, took notes on that

lecture, and took two learning assessments after watching the

lecture. Students who were not using their mobile phones wrote

down 62% more information in their notes, took more detailed

notes, were able to recall more detailed information from the

lecture, and scored a full letter grade and a half higher on a

multiple choice test than those students who were actively

using their mobile phones. Theoretical and pedagogical

implications are discussed.
