Critical analysis and evaluation of Frankenstein

Written by Mary Shelley in 1816 when she was 19 years old, Frankenstein is one of the most

contradicting and disputed romantic tales of its time. This is a romantic fiction that is

controlled by the marvelous and the powers that originate from supernatural beings(Shelley,

Bennett, & Robinson, 1990). At the beginning of the fiction, the tale- teller disobeys some of

the natural laws of credibility when he introduces magicians, witches and goblins into the tale

amidst of himself and all those hearing from him. He forgets that he and the hearer are not

among the supernatural immortals but mortal being. In this case, the marvelous is so much

important to the author and the reader of his work. If one tries to examine what the marvelous

are, naturally we expect them to be strong from all perspectives but from the description

made by the author on the effects that they have to the human beings, we can as well compare

them to other immortal beings(Shelley, Bennett, & Robinson, 1990). They are inferior against

what is expected of them. The author forgets that use of some of the characteristics of

immortal beings like their supernatural powers in fiction works will only be important with

some conditions, when the laws of nature are purely represented in the context. This is not the

case that is experienced in the tale. The author is using the supernatural powers in a wrong

way just to create an imagination. What is actually expected by the reader and the hearer is to

see what really the supernatural powers are capable of doing.Miracles out of the supernatural

powers from the immortals are expected rather than being used to create some mere

imaginations(Fisch, Mellor, & Schor, 1993).

The author to some extent gives the marvels an indirect importance when describing them.

He is able to make a true and fully explanation of what they are and the expected damage and

effects they may cause. Sapient Partridge is neither scared when the ghost appears. He

actually shows no sign of being terrified because of his believe that the said ghost was just a

man who was dressed scary with an intention of terrifying people(Fisch, Mellor, & Schor,

1993). This goes on till he saw the little man scared which now made him horrific and totally

scared. The author places men in place of supernatural creatures because he don’t want to

make a direct communication of what the really effects of the immortals were.

There are also different implications that are portrayed from the subtitle, “the modern

Prometheus” which is a Greek title that describes the creation and existence of man from clay

by an immortal human being. The method of creation implied in the romantic fiction the

Frankenstein is similar with what is believed by the modern scientists on the origin of human

beings. Historical critics highly concentrate on some of the elements of the romantic fiction

that seem to be unconscious(Shelley, Bennett, & Robinson, 1990). When trying to investigate

the real origin of the tale, some critics more so the biographic critics have been found of

tracing it from Mary’s personal life. They claim that the main idea source of the story came

from the relationship of marry more especially her marriage with Shelley. The inspiration of

coming up with such a romantic fiction was their marriage. When investigating the political

allegory, it is a bit contradictive. The theological view and her alterations on religion also

bring some sense of contradictions on her tale. It is believed to have originated and pre-

emerged from the contemporary believes and Christian acceptance of existence of immortal

beings with supernatural powers(Fisch, Mellor, & Schor, 1993).

Suddenly, a solitary expedition happens on the mountain where Frankenstein meets with a

monster. He tried to describe the monster as harmless in nature. The monster that he made is

the one that he had animated earlier on(Branagh, Lady & Doyle, 1998). The monster forces

him into a conference where he is compelled to listen to an oration from it. He is lectured on

what had happen in the past. The history is all about what it underwent before introducing its

introduction to the human society. Most of the details given in this lecture are improbable.

They tend to familiarize us with the being that it regards. From the earlier description, the

monster was harmless but now it became harmful to the human society. It becomes too

violent and the consequences are seen(Branagh, Lady & Doyle, 1998). We also learn from

the papers hidden in the coat on the person who was responsible for his origin. The fury he

developed to Frankenstein and the whole human race is revealed.
