CBSE Class 9 Mathematics
Sample Paper -01 (2017-18)
Solution

Section-A
(Question numbers 1 to 6 carry 1 mark each)

1. If xa/b=1, then find the value of ‘a’.

Answer: a = 0

Since a/b =0 , then x0=1

2. If p(x) = 2x3 + 5x2 – 3x -2 is divided by x-1, then find the remainder.

Answer: 2

p(1) is the remainder.

p(1) = 2(1)3 + 5(1)2 – 3(1) -2 = 2 + 5 -3 -2 = 2

3. The distance of the point (0, -1) from the origin is ________.

Answer: 1

d =
=

= 1

4. If the vertical angle of an isosceles triangle is 1000, then find the measures of its
base angles.

Answer: 40° , 40°

Let measure of each base angle of an isosceles triangle be x.

Therefore, we have

100° + x + x = 180° 2x = 180° – 100° x = 40°.

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 7 / 28

5. The ratio of the whole surface area of a solid sphere and a solid hemisphere is ____.

Answer: 4 : 3

Total Surface area of a sphere: Total Surface area of a solid hemisphere =

= 4 : 3

6. There are 60 boys and 40 girls in a class. A student is selected at random. Find the
probability that student is a girl.

Answer:
Total no. of students in the class = 100

No. of girls in the class = 40

P(the student is a girl) =

Section B
(Question numbers 7 to 12 carry 2 marks each)

7. If p = 2- a, then prove that a3 + 6 a p + p3 – 8 = 0.

Answer: Since p = 2 –a, p + a – 2 = 0

p3 +a3 +(-2)3 = 3(p)(a)(-2) [Since if a + b + c = 0, then a3 + b3 + c3 = 3 abc]

p3 +a3 – 8 = -6ap

a3 + 6 a p + p3 – 8 = 0.

8. In the adjoining figure, we have AB = BC, BX = BY. Show that AX = CY (using

appropriate Euclid’s axiom)

Answer: We have

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 8 / 28

AB = BC ----------(1)
BX = BY-----------(2)

Subtract (2) from (1)

AB – BX = BC – BY

Now, by Euclid’s axiom 3, we have

If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.

Hence , AX = CY ( Since BX = BY)

9. If two opposite angles of a parallelogram are (63 -3x)° and (4x -7)°. Find all the angles
of the parallelogram.

Answer: In a parallelogram, the opposite angles are equal.

(63 -3x)° = (4x -7)°

4x + 3x = 63 +7

7x = 70

x = 10

(63 -3x)° = 33°

(4x -7)° = 33°

Sum of all interior angles of a parallelogram = 360°

Sum of the other two opposite angles = 360° - (33° + 33°)

= 360° - 66° = 294°

Each of the other two opposite angles = = 147°

Hence the four angles of a parallelogram are 33°, 147°, 33°, 147°

10. Three Schools situated at P, Q and R in the figure are equidistant from each other as
shown in the figure. Find QOR.

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 9 / 28

Answer: In PQR, we have

PQ = QR = PR (Since P, Q and R are equidistant)

So, PQR is an equilateral triangle.

QPR = 60°

So, QOR = 2 QPR = 2(60°) = 120° (Since angle subtended by an arc at the centre is
double the angle subtended by it at any point on the remaining part of the circle.)

11. The diameter of the two right circular cones are equal if their slant heights are in
the ratio 3 :2, then what is the ratio of their curved surface areas?

Answer: Let the radii and slant heights of two right circular cones are r1, l1 and r2, l2

respectively.

Ratio of their Curved Surface Area = (Since r1 = r2)

= = 3 : 2

12. A batsman in his 11th innings makes a score of 68 runs and there by increases his

average score by 2. What is his average score after the 11th innings.

Answer: Let the average score of 11 innings be x:

Then the average score of 10 innings = x – 2

Total score of 11 innings = 11 x

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 10 / 28

Total score of 10 innings = 10(x -2) = 10 x – 20

Score of the 11th innings = Total score of 11 innings – Total score of 10 innings

= 11 x – (10x – 20)

= x + 20

x + 20 = 68 ( Given )

x = 48

Hence, the average score after the 11th innings is 48.

In DAP and EBP,

DAP = EBP (Given)

AP = BP (P is mid-point of AB)

DPA = EPB (From above)

DAP EBP (ASA congruence rule)

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 15 / 28

AD = BE (By CPCT)

18. Show that the area of a rhombus is half the product of the lengths of its diagonals.

Answer: Let ABCD be a rhombus whose diagonals are AC and BD.

Area of rhombus ABCD = Area of ABD + Area of CBD

(Since diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular to each other)

(Product of the lengths of its diagonals)

19. A, B, C and D are the four points on a circle. AC and BD intersect at point E such that
BEC = 130° and ECD = 20°. Find BAC.

Answer: DEC + BEC = 180º (Linear pairs angles)

DEC = 180º - 130º = 50º

Material downloaded from myCBSEguide.com. 16 / 28

In ECD,
EDC + DEC + DCE = 180º (Angle sum property of triangle)

EDC = 180º - (50º + 20º)

EDC = 110º

EDC = BAC = 110º (angles in the same segment of a circle are equal)

OB = OC (Radius of Circle)

AB = CD (Given Equal Chords)

AOB DOC ( By SSS Congruency rule)

Therefore, AOB = DOC by (CPCT)

Hence, the equal chords subtend equal angles at the centre
