Pi Ta Khonnnnnnnn!

For this outfit, there is a mixture of Northeast of Thailand culture and modern day fashion
in it. We use “Pi ta khon” to emphasize tradition of the Northeast. Normally, Pi ta khon is a big
mask for people to wear. However, we adapt it a little. We used the concept of Pi ta khon and
apply to the dress. Furthermore, we still keep the concept of recycling in our mind. The material
that we chose to create this dress will be stuff that can be reused. Therefore, materials that we
use are things like a plastic bottle, rubber band and some used paper as well as a cardboard
box.

What we did in the first place before we begin the dressmaking process is we find the
design and ideas to create our best dress. However, it might sound easy but it is not, we did a
research on Pi ta khon, how it looks like and what use to make it, instead of using the real
equipment for Pi ta khon, we use a cardboard cut into shape and use all the recycle equipment
to mold the dress to form shape. What we’ve planned is that the dress will represent all 4
famous parts of Thailand, the head will represent the south since the crown will be made out of
used plastic and water bottle. The dress itself will be out of a plastic bag and will represent the
northeast, while the middle of the dress will represent the middle part of Thailand. We used our
ancestors believes and Thai people believe in spirits and life after death to collaborate with our
dress.

The top part that will be used as a crown made out of hanger and a traditional Thai
weave (for making sticky rice). We added major details during decoration such as painting Pi ta
khon face on the traditional thai weave by sprayed red color.

In the middle, the cardboard box is being used to make the dress. We paint the box red
while using blue acrylic color to paint the eyes and white colour to create the white teeth. Since
the dress were influenced by Pi ta khon so it has to look scary. We cut the sides into hole each
for our model to put their arm in. To the front and the back of the dress, we cut a hole around
7-8 each side in order to tie a rope (influenced by shoelace). We decided to add the nose which
decorated with some flexible pipes, one with gray and another with gold color, attach with the
hole on each side.The result is the box has two sides open which it looks similar to the
refrigerator.

In the bottom part, we did use the black plastic bag to be used instead of a skirt. We
decorated it by attaching color papers into it, including with red, purple and indigo. We did cut
those three color paper into a big triangle shape and attach it on the plastic bag. Also, we did
cut those color papers into a dashed line. In the end, the result that we got is lively and bright
skirt.

According to lack of materials and less amount of time we have, we faced lots of
obstacles. However, we do not let those obstacles overcome our patients. Finally, we achieved
our goals and finished the dress like we planned.
