ABSTRACT:

Wheelchairs are used by the people who cannot walk due to physiological or physical illness,
injury or any disability. Recent development promises a wide scope in developing smart wheelchairs.
The aim of this paper is to prepare a Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair for the physically disabled
people who face difficulty in moving from one place to another in day today life. This paper proposes an
integrated approach to real time detection, tracking and direction recognition of hands, which is intended
to be used as a human-robot interaction interface for the intelligent wheelchair. This paper is to
demonstrate that accelerometers can be used to effectively translate hand gestures into computer
interpreted signals.

In this project we are designing and developing a gesture based wheelchair which controls the
wheelchair using hand movements. The system is divided into two main units: Mems Sensor and
wheelchair control. The Mems sensor, which is connected to person’s hand, will detect hand movement
and gives signal to the microcontroller. The wheelchair control unit is a wireless unit that is developed
using other microcontroller and motor driving circuits. When we change hand direction, the sensor
detect that and values are given to microcontroller. Depending on the direction of the hand movement,
microcontroller controls the wheel chair directions like LEFT, RIGHT, and FRONT. The wheel chair is
also fitted with an ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles in its path and warn the person.
