1.0 DESIGN OF CONDENSATE TANK SHED ROOF FRAME

This section covers the in-place analysis and design for the condensate tank shed. The design
was carried out in accordance with BS EN 1993.

Basic Data

Total Length (b) = 8.425m

Bay width (d) = 5.850m

Roof overhang = 0.450m

Max Height (h) = 3.687m

Roof slope (s) = 6o

Dead Load (DL)

Aluminium sheet (0.7mm) Long span = 0.025KN/m2

Roof Insulations and fixing = 0.100KN/m2

Ceiling = 0.075KN/m2

Services = 0.050KN/m2

Purlin Weight = 0.040KN/m2

Total = 0.290KN/m2

= (0.290 x 5.850 x 0.5) + (0.290 x 0.45)

= 0.980KN/m

Live Load (LL)

Live load on roof without access = 0.68 KN/m2

= (0.680 x 5.850 x 0.5) + (0.680 x 0.45)

= 2.30KN/m

Wind Loads

Determination of basic wind velocity: ( )

v = c +c +v ,

Where:

vb = basic wind velocity

cdir = directional factor

cseason = seasonal factor

vb,0 = fundamental value of the basic wind velocity

, = 30m/s (assumed)

For Terrain category II = 0.05m

v = c +c +v , = 30m/s

For simplification the directional factor and the seasonal factor are in general taken
as 1.0

Peak pressure (q (z))

q (z) = [1 + 7lv (z)] x x ρ x v (z) 2

v (z) = c (z) x c (z) x v

Where:

v (z) = mean wind velocity

c (z) = roughness factor

c (z) = orography factor = 1.0

c (z) = k x ln ( ) for z ≤z≤z

c (z) = c (z ) for z ≤ z

Where:

z = Roughness length

k = terrain factor, depending on the roughness length (z ) calculated using

.
k = 0.19 x ( )
,

z , = 0.05 (terrain category II) (EN 1991-1-4; Table 4.1)

z = Minimum height = 2.0m (EN 1991-1-4; Table 4.1)

z = Taken as 200m (EN 1991-1-4; section 4.3.2)

l (z) = Turbulence intensity

Condensate Tank Shed Design Report Page 6 of 9

l (z) = For z ≤z≤z
( ) ( )

l = l (z ) For z ≤ z

Where:

k = Turbulence factor, recommended value is taken as 1.0

Z = 3.687m;

Therefore: z ≤z≤z

.
q (z) = [1 + ( ) (
] x x ρ x [0.19 x ( ) x ln ( ) x 1 x v ] 2
) ,

.
c (z) = 0.19 x ( ) x ln ( )
,

. . .
c (z) = 0.19 x ( ) x ln ( ) = 0.817
. .

c (z) = 1.0

v = 30m/s

l (z) = . = 0.233
( )
.

q (z) = [1 + 7(0.233)] x x 1.25 x (0.817 x 1.0 x 30)2 = 987.8N/m2

q (z) = 0.988KN/m2

Wind Pressure on Surfaces

External Pressure coefficients

The wind pressure acting on the external surfaces (w ) is obtained from the following
expression

w = q (z) x c

Wind load on the structural steel column;
