THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

It is not always easy to see when people drinking and

across the line from moderate to social use to problem

drinking. What if consume alcohol to cope with difficulties

or to avoid feeling bad, it is in potentially dangerous

territory. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse can sneak up on,

individual so it is important to be aware of the warnings

signs and take steps to cut back if you recognize them.

Alcoholism and alcohol addiction are due to many

interconnected factors, including genetics, how people were

raised, social environment, and emotional health.

Alcoholism is a broad term for problems with alcohol,

and generally refers to alcohol addiction, which is the

compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic

beverages, usually to the detriment of the drinker’s

health, personal relationships, and social standing. It is

medically considered a disease, specifically an addictive

illness. Alcohol misuse has the potential to damage almost

every organ in the body, including the brain. The

cumulative toxic effects of chronic alcohol abuse can cause

both medical and psychiatric problems.

Alcohol has been created under the influence of a

desire-oriented attitude. That is why; the six foes

(namely, pride, greed, envy, anger, lust & ) get awakened

and erupt in a strong manner by drinking it. Upon consuming

alcohol, a black covering is created around the body, mind

and intellect of the individual and he completely goes

under the control of the mantrik (A subtle-sorcerer). Due

to the Mayavi (Illusion creating) and Mohini (Enticing)

components in alcohol, the individual feels like consuming

alcohol repeatedly. Also, due to the Mohini component

present in alcohol, a ring of Energy of attraction

of Mohini is created in the alcohol, and waves of

distressing energy are congregated in the body of the

individual and the body of the individual becomes

completely charged with these waves.

Statement of the Problem

This study will determine the effects and practices of

the Criminology Student toward alcoholism in Samar College

during the SY: 2017-2018

Specifically, it answer to the following question:

1. What is the profile of the students in term of the

following characteristics?

1.1 Age and sex

1.2 Civil Status

1.3 Year level

1.4 Family Background

1.5 Religion

2. What are the factors which lead to Criminology

Student toward alcoholism:

2.1 Influence of friends

2.2 Family Problem

3. Is there significant relationship between the

attitude of the Criminolgy Students toward alcoholism and

their personal variates.

4. What is the reporting and non-reporting status of

the teachers and parents towards alcoholism?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the

teacher and students?

6. What are the safety measures were suggested by the

teachers to prevent the alcoholism of the students.

HYPOTHESIS

Based on the specific questions formulated in this

study, the following hypothesis will be tested:

1. There is no significant relationship between the

Effects and Practices of the Criminology Student in Samar

College toward alcoholism.

Theoretical Framework

This study anchored on the following theories:

Etiological Theories, Psychological Theories, Reinforcement

Theory.

Etiological Theory presents a selective review of

current studies on the ethology of alcoholism. Personality

type has not been shown to reliably predict who will

develop alcohol problems.

Psychological Theory updating and expanding the

classic psychological theories of drinking and alcoholism,

this fully revised second edition incorporates state-of-

the-art presentations from leaders in the alcoholism field:

Reinforcement Theory, experimental literature is

reviewed to show that reinforcement theory can explain the

rewards of drinking behavior, even in the case of the man

who is apparently punish by such behavior.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

RELATED LITERATURE

In the present chapter the investigator is made an

attempt to report the literature based upon on the various

aspects of effects and practices of alcoholism issue. a

study of relevant literature is important to the community

to be aware of the different effects and abusive used of

alcohol specially in the city of Catbalogan.

It is generally accepted the around 2-5% of the adult

population show major signs of alcohol dependence, that

alcohol-related harm is experienced by up to 20% of the

population, and that approximately 60% drink at risk-free

levels. Further prevalence studies show that there are high

numbers of problem drinkers who attend general hospital

services for reasons other than their alcohol consumption.

Nurses are in constant contact with patients who may have

an early problem with alcohol but who are admitted for

other reasons, and they are in a prime position to

comprehensively assess patients (including alcohol

screening), develop rapport and provide 'counselling'.

Also, university nursing education is propelling nurses

toward adoption of independent discipline focused models of

care which are increasingly becoming independent of the

medical model. Recent trends in the management of problem

drinkers suggest that controlled drinking approaches may

well offer treatment options to nurses that the traditional

abstinence approaches did not. This paper presents a brief

overview of the notion of controlled drinking, then

critically reviews the nursing research studies and the

descriptive literature providing direction for nursing

education. Some recent clinical initiatives are discussed

which highlight the flaws existing in nursing education,

including lack of sufficient curriculum hours and the need

for better designed education models and strategies.

This section present the literature reviewed to

inherence the concept of the study at hand.

RELATED STUDIES
`
There are types of behaviour that may indicate an

addiction problem such as an inability to relax, erratic

behaviour with violent mood swings, incoherent speech,

hyperactivity; talking for long periods of time,

deterioration of physical appearance. These are just some of

the possible signs of drug and alcohol misuse but when you

are suffering from an addiction you may sometimes be the

last one to recognise your own symptoms of addition. There

are a variety of different treatment that help individuals

manage their addictions. Some are residential, others are

accessed while the individual still lives in their home.

The recent admission of alcoholism into the

scientifically sanctioned circle of diseases reflects a

number of interacting factors, including the increased

attention of the federal government, to what has been

estimated to be the third most serious health problem in

this country . The studies described in this review

represent a beginning in the task of trying to formulate an

adequate conceptual and empirical framework within which to

study the diverse phenomena of alcohol addiction.(nelson

1967).

Cognitive studies, particularly those conducted within

the last 15 years, have significantly extended our

understanding of alcohol use and abuse. Alternative

cognitive analyses of the tension-reduction theory and of

traditional learning procedures have successfully

accommodated much evidence that appeared to be conflicting.

The role of vicarious learning in the development,

maintenance, and prevention of drinking has been stressed.

Within the broader context of cognitive-social learning

theory, efficacy and outcome expectations have been shown

to be important determinants of drinking and its

psychosocial effects. The traditional concepts of craving

and loss of control have been challenged and reinterpreted

in terms of testable cognitive-behavioral concepts.

Treatment strategies have increasingly reflected the

influence of cognitive-social learning theory, whereas

cognitive-behavioral models of relapse and prevention

following treatment have generated controversy, fresh

ideas, and new research. Wilson, G. T. (1987).

It is more than an up-to-date handbook: it is a fresh

synthesis of our understanding of the nature of alcoholism,

treatment, and human change. In this new edition,

extensively revised from the original Swedish version, the

author discusses questions such as: What is alcoholism?

Does treatment work? Are some types of treatment more

effective than others? Do certain types of clients benefit

more from certain types of treatment?

Drawing on a large body of findings, Lars Lindström offers

a practicable model for differential treatment, specifies

effective ingredients in alcoholism treatment, and analyses

the relationship between psychosocial treatment and natural

processes of healing.

Written with admirable clarity, "Managing Alcoholism" is

essential reading for anyone interested in alcohol

problems, psychosocial treatment, or health administration.

Lindström, L. (1992).

the foregoing study is similar to the present study

considering that the study is focus on effects and

practices of criminology students towards alcoholism in

samar college Catbalogan city.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the design, instrument used,

validation of instrument, sampling procedure, data

gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study uses descriptive design with correlational

testing of hypothesis.

The descriptive design will be utilized for describing

the profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex,

civil status, year level, family background, and religion.

It will also describe the results crimes effects and

practices of criminology students toward alcoholism of the

respondents regarding Influence of friends, family

Problems, is there significant relationship between the

attitude of the Criminology Students toward alcoholism and

their personal variates.

The correlational testing for hypothesis will be done

to find the relationships between the profile of the

respondents and their viewpoint on crimes as influence by

the parents.
The main instrument that will be used is a self-made

survey questionnaire and will be using descriptive and

inferential statistical tools such as frequency and

percentage counts, mode, mean, weighted mean, pearson-

product moment of correlation, and probability value.

Locale of the Study

The researcher will be conducting an investigation

pertaining to crimes as influence by the family in the City

Of Catbalogan, more or less 800 kilometers away from Metro

Manila as the Capital City of the Philippines. Figure 2 is

the Map showing the Locale of the Study.

Instrumentation

This study will be using a self-made questionnaire.

The questionnaire is composed of two parts.

Part I describe the profile of the respondents in

terms of age and sex, civil status, year level, family

background, and religion. It is a supplemental type since

the respondents are already in the tertiary level.

Part II will be intended for the view point of

the respondents in terms of Influence of friends, family

Problems, is there significant relationship between the

attitude of the Criminology Students toward alcoholism and

their personal variates.

This will be quantified by the five-Likert scale 5-

strongly agree (SA), 4-agree (A), 3-uncertain (U), 2-

disagree (D) and 1-strongly disagree (SD).

Validation of Instrument

The instrument will be using test-retest validation.

This will be tried out to ten third year criminology

students of Samar College, then after 8 days it will be

fielded again to them. The results of the test-retest

validation will be utilized for revising and replacing

items on the questionnaire which is cannot be comprehended

easily. The questionnaire will also undergo expert

validation, the questionnaire will be given to the experts,

they give critiques. After which, the researchers will

incorporate the suggestions and print copies proportional

to the number of respondents of the study.

The result will be analyzed using the following formula.

Where: refers to the coefficient of reliablity

D refers to the deviation, and

N refers to the number of respondents.

Table 1

Coefficient of Reliability

VALUE DEGREE OF RELIABILITY

0.95 - 1.00 VERY HIGH
0.90 - 0.94 HIGH
0.80 - 0.89 FAIRLY HIGH
0.70 - 0.79 RATHER HIGH
BELOW 0.70 LOW

Sampling Procedure

The respondents of the study will be taken from the

students of Samar College who are currently studying and

enrolled in the said institution then it will be sampled

using the Sloven’s formula. After arriving with the desired

samples, names will be written in a piece of paper. Using a

fishbowl technique, the researchers will randomly pick

papers until reach the desired samples.

Data Gathering Procedure

Data gathering will start by writing letters to the

authority. First to the registrar for the names and numbers

of the students who will serve as respondents of the study,

a letter to the dean of Criminal Justice department for

asking permission that the researcher are currently

conducting an investigation about effects and practices of

criminology students toward alcoholism and will also ask

the assistance of the dean in conducting meeting for the

fielding of instrument.

Another letter will be given to the respondents to

assure that all the data collected will be treated at its

most confidentiality. During the fielding, the researchers

will stay so that if there are queries and clarifications

they can directly answered. It is also for the hundred

percent retrieval of the questionnaires.

After the data gathering, it will be tallied,

presented in the table, analyzed and reported.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools will be used for the

study:
Frequency counts and percentage. This will be used for

accumulating number of respondents with similar age and

sex, civil status, size of the family and average monthly

family income.

Mode. This statistical tool is use to reflect the most

appeared average monthly family income of the respondents.

Mean. This will be used for getting the average age of

the respondents as well as their average score for the

range of viewpoint on death penalty.

Grand weighted mean. This statistical tool is for

coming up with the overall view point of the respondents on

death penalty in terms of racial attitudes, racial

compositions, assumptions, and assimilation.

Pearson-product moment of correlation. This is use to

find relationship between paired variables, in this study

it includes profile of the respondents and their view point

on death penalty.
