This is a sure fired way to make a belt the right way, the first time, and every time. |
created this method and Size Chart some years ago after having to re-do one too many
belts because it came out too short, which is usually the case.
The Size Chart has been created based on Pant Size Measurements, (far left column.)
This however, can be a hit or miss depending on the customer being true about waist size
and in some cases the person's body type and build. With that said, I strongly recommend
making a Belt Tester. This is done by cutting a 14" belt strip as long as you can get from a
side of leather or by purchasing at you local leather supply store.
Using the Buckle End Template provided, mark and punch the snap and slot placements
on one end of the Belt Tester, install the snaps, and add a Center Bar Buckle, From the
point shown below on the buckle, measure out to 24" and mark for a hole every one inch to
about 3" from the other end of the belt tester.
After you have the holes punched, start at the first hole (at 24",) and write the
measurement under each hole. You will have 24, 25, 26, and so on all the way to the last
hole on the Tester.
Once made, you can have the wearer of the belt try it on and buckle it to the hole that is
most desired. Make a note of the measurement at the hole where it is buckled, (this is the
Buckle to Center Hole.) Then, using this; refer to the Size Chart to find the correct Belt
Blank Length. For example; the belt tester is buckled at the 40" hole, The Belt Blank
Length will need to be 48”
Using the provided Belt End Templates, mark the layouts on each end of the belt blank
and punch the snap placement holes, the buckle tongue slot, and the adjustment holes using
the proper sized punches. Trim, dye, finish, and install the snaps.
Now, I have included a Shield Buckle Chart with this in the event the wearer wants to
use a shield buckle instead of a center bar or heel buckle. As you can see, in this event the
belt with a shield buckle is 2" shorter because of the length of the shield buckle. If the
wearer wants to use a shield buckle or center bar depending on the event, make the belt for
the center bar buckle and simply add two more adjustment holes to the belt. In any case 1
recommend using the desired buckle when using the tester on the customer to ensure the
right fit.
Thope you find this as useful as I have and have much suecess in your belt making
endeavors. Enjoy!
