PROPOSAL

+ RATIONAL +

Units 1 through 12 of Creative Media production allowed me to gain key skills and
understanding of media, so that I can create high quality productions to a professional
standard. In the earlier units I learned the basics of editing, filming and script wri ting. I
analyzed professional examples of media (unit 1), from which I learned the significance
of mise-en-scene. I also learned to extend my research in both primary and secondary
form (unit 2), making all my research relevant, concise and referenced. As my learning
developed I picked up more practical skills; I honed my abilities in visual and auditory
communication. These basics were demonstrated in picture adverts (No Smoking
campaign), Short films (Tarot, Devils Dance), Radio Shows and Music videos (Heart-
shaped Box, Ultrasound). My short films weren't produced effectively, with the script
writing, filming and editing being particularly poor. However, as later projects
developed, my production skills also advanced. In unit 6 I produced a music video f or
"Heart-shaped box" by Nirvana. Although the filming and pre-production was still quite
rough, my editing showed to be a developing strength. I learned many editing
techniques and skills that helped me to produce a relevant piece of work that was
appealing. Following this, my final major production was a medium for me to focus on
editing and to improve my other production elements. I produced a music video for
Joyner Lucas' "Ultrasound". Within the unit I learned to produce the relevant pre -
production elements to a high standard. This then allowed me to produce a music video
to a professional standard.
This year I chose and focused on a specialism; Sports Journalism. As I am a sports -
oriented individual I chose to base my second year around sports, so that I am
producing something that interests me. I produced Studio and radio review shows,
documentaries and tactical videos about football. Within these units my strengths, which
are editing and filming, directed me towards documentaries. This means that for my
final major production I will produce a football documentary.
+ CONCEPT +
My production will be a football documentary that focuses on the footballing habits of
those that work away from their home country (expats) Within my production I will
focus on the team based in Barcelona, named ‘Tea and Busquets’. The football team is
comprised of a group of people who work out of their home country in various roles in
Barcelona. The documentary will explain the team’s and the players’ origins, how and
why they play, as well as how they incorporate it into their personal life. Within this
project I will utilize my storytelling skills and cinematography; I will need to present my
findings clearly in an appealing manner. The documentary will begin in the U K and will
show my journey to Barcelona, paralleling the journey of the expat workers. Following
this I will introduce the football team through a series of interviews in whi ch the athletes
talk about their footballing lives. Within the documentary I will show the athletes' lives
off the pitch and how they 'live football' in order to connect the audience to the team.
The documentary will highlight the athletes' sporting lives and will lead up to a football
match. My knowledge and interest in sports will help me to establish the story of the
footballers in an appropriate fashion. In addition this editing will have high focus. As
editing has proven to be an established strength of mine I will ensure that editing is
executed thoroughly. For my production I will require the permission to document the
football team. As I have contact with the manager, I am confident that I can negotiate
permission to record the team and their efforts. The team are based in Barcelona. Whilst
this is a long distance from me I have the organization skills to arrange transport,
accommodation and necessities (food, drink etc.) to ensure that I can make effective use
of the opportunity. When filming I will be under a strict time restraint. I will be limited to
my flight times and need to ensure that everything is recorded to the highest quality
before I leave Barcelona. My work should not be offensive to anyone as it does not
contain any controversial topics. However, as I am filming in Barcelona, Spain I will need
to ensure that I respect civilians and their culture. This means that I should not abuse my
filming rights and respect the wishes of those that do not want to be filmed.
+ EVALUATION +
In previous units my evaluations have been relatively poor and restrictive. This has been
due to lack of organization and time restraint, leaving my evaluations to the last minute.
In this project I have elected to do weekly video logs. This will give me t he opportunity
to explain the reasoning behind my ideas and the paths I take in my work. For example,
in my log for the weeks of editing I can explain why I have chosen a certain technique,
the effect it has and how it helps me to develop my work. These video logs also give me
a chance to reflect on my work and the decisions I have made. At the start of the unit I
bought I book in which I can record my ideas for the work at hand and for future ideas.
When I get home I often brainstorm ideas and concepts for my production, which are
soon forgotten. My book will allow me to capture every idea I think and assess its place
in my production. When collaborating with people I will assess the work that we have
produced in the time period. Within this assessment I will focus on how we worked
together, what we produced and how it will be implemented into my production. Also
within my video logs I will state my intentions for the following week. This will help me
in future evaluative logs as I can compare my intentions with the outcome.
