Explain the significance of the Qur’an and the Sunnah
Goal  as the primary sources of Islamic beliefs, practice, and
law, and their influence in Muslim daily life.

● Muslim belief in same god the Jewish and


Christian religions.
Background  ● Muslims honor Jewish and Christian prophets.
Information  ● Muslims believed that Muhammad gave the
purest version of God’s truth (god spoke words,
somebody wrote it down).

● God’s truth written in Qur’an


● Muslims believe that Muhammad spoke to god.
● Inside Qur’an is records of 22 years of
revelations to Muhammad.
● Qur’an: words god spoke and people wrote
down.
● First writing came to Muhammad when he
prayed in a cave outside Mecca in 610. Started
The Qur’an  relations.
● Died in around 632.
● Inside Qur’an: Nature of God, creat, and the
human soul. Also address moral (loyal), legal
(law), and family issues. Much of the language is
highly poetic. Lyrical.
● About twenty years of Muhammad’s life

studying the Qur’an
○ Later on studies are able to move on from
studying the Qur’an
○ Even in Musac (church) they study law,
philosophy, math, and history
○ Education is a Huge focus
● Social Classes
○ Classes depended on religion
○ Four classes: Arabs muslims born there
(1), non-Arabs muslims not born there(2),
Jews and Christians (3), and slaves (middle
ages)(4)
● Men and Women
○ Men expected to support the family and
represent them in the world
○ Women stayed home, women fewer rights
○ Polygamy allowed men to be able to have
four different wives
○ Women are not allowed to have more than
one husband
○ Women not allowed to drive or have jobs
○ If by getting a new wife and start treating
first wife poorly you are not allowed to
get another wife.
○ If a woman is without a husband a man
has to take her in as his wife
○ Women is not allowed to make requests
without her husband's permission

● Five laws: Faith, prayer, fasting, giving to the


poor, and pilgrimage
● You have to believe there is no god but the god
● Have to believe that Muhammad is the perfect
model and the messenger of god also have to
declare
Islamic Laws   ● Have to pray, five times a day: Stop, drop, and

● Almsgiving, Alms for the poor, charity work
● Alms means help
● During Ramadan Muslims eat no food between
sunrise and sunset for a month: time to refocus

● Some people also fast from things that distract


you from faith
● Pilgrimage means to journey somewhere that
has a meaningful end goal for you
● Muslims must make a pilgrimage to the holy
city of Islam and Mecca because it was where
Muhammad lived - One you get there you have
to circle the main black rock seven times hoping
to touch or kiss the stone at least once
● The stone is something that Muhammad used to
help him talk to god and see things
● 1- Faith
● 2- Prayer
● 3- Fasting
● 4- Charity
● 5- Pilgrimage
● Qur’an requires that every Muslim to make the
hajj to the stone at least once
