Sinners

“This man receives sinners and

eats with them” (Luke 15:2) . T he
Pharisees’ statement of
judgment against Jesus is in
fact a proclamation of Gospel
truth. For our God is one who
delights in mercy, who casts all
our sins in to the depths of the
sea through the cross ( Micah
7:18–20) . “Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners”
(1 Tim. 1:15) . T hose who refuse
to be counted as sinners also
ref use Jesus who came only for
sinners. Those like the older son
(Luke 15:11–32), who think they
are righteous of themselves,
will not join in the heavenly
celebration over the sinner wh o
repents and so remain outside
of the Father’s house. Let us
therefore be on guard against
self –righteously trusting in our
own merits. “Humble
yourselves, therefore, und er the
mighty hand of God so that at
the proper time He may exalt
you” (1 Peter 5:6). Rejoice that
Jesus receives sinners like us
and that He still sits at table
with us in the Holy Supper,
bestowing His forgiveness and
life.

Gospel:

15:11-32
“Be merciful, even as your
Father also is mercif ul” ( Luke
6:36–42). The old Adam in us
wants to condemn and seek
vengeance. But the Lord says,
“Vengeance is Mine, I will
repay” (Rom. 12:14–21). To
condemn, to aven ge yourself , is
to put yourself in the place of
God. I t is to fail to trust that He
is just. Ultimately, it is to
disbelieve that Jesus suff ered
the f ull vengeance f or all
wrongs. Only Christ is merciful
as the Father is merciful. He is
the one who overcame all evil
with the go od of His cross,
forgiving even His executioners.
Jesus is our Joseph, who
comforts us with words of
pardon and reconciliation (Gen.
50:15–21) . He is the One who
does not condemn but gives life
that runs over. Only through
faith in Christ are we sons of
the Father—being merciful,
forgiving, doing good to our
enemies. For in Christ we know
that th e suf ferings of this
present time are not worthy to
be compared with the glory
which shall be revealed in us
(Rom. 8:8–13).

The net they would use is the

not in spectacular signs like
wind and f ire and earthquakes

be found in human intelligence
and wisdom. The power of God
to save comes in th e still, small

the disciples could catch
nothing. But in the light of
Christ, whose Word was
attached to the water, the boats

the Word do not believe, pastors

“Unless your righteo usness

His commandments (Ex. 20:1–

in your own goodness but in the
goodness of Christ, who did not
come to destroy the Law and
the P rophets, but to f ulfill them
for you. In Christ, your
righteousness does indeed
exceed that of the scribes and
Pharisees. For you have been
baptiz ed into Christ’s death and
your sinf ul nature crucif ied.
Therefore, he who has died has
been freed from sin ( Rom. 6:1–

In the Garden of Eden, our f irst

from the gracious hand of God,
apart from any burdensome
work (Gen 2:7–17). But af ter the
fall, food would be received only
through toil and labor. The curse
declared, “By the sweat of you r
face you shall eat bread, till you
return to the grou nd . . .” (Gen.
3:19) . I n other words, “T he
wages of sin is death” (Rom.

world came Jesus the Messiah
to restore creation. Having
compassion on the weary
multitudes, He renewed the
bounty of E den on the third day,
freely granting an abundance of
bread to the 4,0 00 (Mark 8:1–9) .
So also our Lord Jesus, havi ng

“Beware of f alse prophets, who

its strength in masquerading as
the truth. False prophets speak
a vision of their own heart, not
from the mouth of the Lord (Jer.
23:16–29) . T hey deny the
judgment of the Lord, spea king
peace to the unre pentant, when
in truth there is condemnation
and wrath. “You will recognize
them by their fruits” ( Matt.

prophet are no t outward
righteousness or success but
faithf ulness in proclaiming the
Word of the Lord. This is the will
of the Father in heaven, that
pastors take heed to the flock,
the Father’s adopted ones (Rom.
8:12–17), warning them against
the wolves and their lies, and
shepherding the Church of God
which He purchased with His

Gospel: Matt. 7:15-23
“The master commended the

steward’s shrewdness is
praiseworthy for two reasons.
First, he knew the master would
be mercif ul. He trusted that the
master would honor the debts
he forgave in the master’s
name. I n the same way, though
we have squandered our
heavenly Father’s posse ssions
in self ishness and sin, Jesus is
the S teward who has canceled
our debt, knowing that His
forgiveness will be honored by
the Father because of the holy
cross. S econdly, the steward
was shrewd in using oil and
wheat to provide for his earthly
welfare. So also do these
earthly elements aid us when
pressed into heavenly use in the
anointing of ba ptism and the
wheat of the Lord’s Supper.
Those who have the
Sacraments will have an ete rnal

“And the Lord had regard for

Abel, Cain’s of fering did not
proceed f rom a heart th at
revered and trusted in the Lord.
Thus, the lowly tax collector
who prayed, “God, be merc if ul
to me, a sinne r!” was the one
who went down to his house
justified bef ore God, not th e
respectable, outwardly
righteous Pharisee who tru sted

your own doing; it is the gift of

[F] St. Stephen, Martyr 12/26/2017 12/26/2017 1 The Christ is born in the land of
Judah, but His own people will
not receive Him. As it was in the
days of Joash, so it is also in
the days of Herod and P ilate.
The Lord “sent prophets among
them to brin g them back to the
Lord. . . but they would not pay
attention” ( 2 Chron. 24:19). As
Zechariah was being stoned he
cried out, “May the Lord see and
avenge!” (2 Chron . 24:-22) . But
the infant Jesus has come to
save and to f orgive. Today, the
Church remem bers St. Stephen,
the f irst martyr af ter Christ’s
ascension. His conf ession
recalled the stif f-necked,
uncircumcised hearts and ears
of Judah that would not receive
the Righteous One ( Acts 7:51–
52). But as his bod y was being
stoned and his spirit received
by the Lord Jesus, S tephen
cried, “Lord, d o not hold this sin
against them” ( Acts 7:59–60) ,
bearing witness to the One who
also said, “Father, f orgive them,
for they know not what they do”
(Luke 23:34). On the second day
of Christmas, our thoughts are
already directed to Christ’s
atoning death to save rebels
like us, and to the vision
Stephen saw: Heaven is op en to
us, Christ is reigning at God’s
right hand, and no sin, death, or
foe can stop Him.

martyred but still a witness,
John was exiled to Patmos and
died an old ma n, according to
traditio n. He bore witness “to
the Word of God and to the
testimo ny of Jesus Christ, even
to all that he saw” ( Rev. 1:2).
Above all, he was a n eyewitness
of Christ who proclaims to us
what he saw and heard
concerning the “Word of L if e”
that was “made manifest” (1
John 1:1–3) . “And we know that
his testimony is true” ( John
21:24). The readings today
include John’s testimony of
Christ’s atoning death and His
third re surrection appearance
(John 21:14) . On the third day of
Christmas, we fi nd joy and
gladness with John and all the
apostles that “we have an

“the propitiation f or our sins,

The
Gospel:Church and the
Matthew world are
2:13-18
awake, but for very diff erent
reasons. The world counts down
to midnight; the Church
watches eagerly for her Master
who is “coming at an hour” we
“do not expect” ( Luke 12:40).
For many, the cha nging year
brings regrets, f ears, and
desperate wishes for
improvement. The world
delights in smooth talk and
illu sions of prosperity at any
cost (I s. 30:9–10). It has already
forgotten “the Holy One of
Israel” born six days e arlier (I s.
30:11). The Church ends the
calendar year dif ferently. “In
returning and rest. . . in
quietness and in trust,” that is,
in repentance and faith, for the
Holy One saves us, and He is
our strength (I s. 30:15). Our
times are in His hands (Ps.
31:15) , the hands of Mary’s Son
—God not only with us, but f or
us ( Matt. 1:23) . So, who could
be against us? If God has given
His Son , “how will He not also
with him graciou sly give us all
things?” ( Rom. 8:31–32). The
Church dresses f or action not in
fear, but in hope; Christ is
coming to serve her with His
gifts ( Luke 12:37). Who is there
to condemn us for the p assing
year? Christ has died, is raised,
and intercedes for us! What
distre ss will the new year
bring? Nothing “can separate us
from the love of God in Christ
Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:34–39)!

( antiphon: v. 6) Apostle

Christ
Gospel: Matthew 24:42-47

Christ brings about a great

reversal in St. Paul. “He who
used to persecute us is now
preaching the faith he once
tried to de stroy” (Gal. 1:23). The
enemy of the Gospel becomes
its foremost preacher, and the
last of the Apostles becomes
the f irst (Matt. 19:3 0). Paul is
God’s “chosen instrument. . . to
carry [His] name bef ore the
Gentiles and kings and the
children of I srael” (Acts 9:15).
The conversion of Paul is only a
more dramatic example of what
God does in revealing Christ to
us. The bondage of our sin
makes saving f aith impossible.
“I believe that I cannot. . .
believe” (SC II I,3). But even this
is no obstacle for our Lord’s
grace in Christ and the Holy
Spirit’s power through the
Gospel. Baptiz ed, filled with the
Holy Spirit, and hearing the
Word of Christ, our ears are
opened and our spiritu al
blindness is lif ted (Acts 9:17–
19) . I t is dangerous to be a
traitor to Christ’s enemies—“I
will show him how much he
must suffer for the sake of My

[F] St. Matthias, Apostle 02/24/2018 02/24/2018 1 We know almost nothing about
St. Matthias compared to Judas.
While we know the grisl y details
of Judas’ death (Acts 1:18–19) ,
we are unsure of Matthias’.
Af ter his election, the Bible
never mentions him again. He
seems to be a f orgotten
apostle. But what is fame to
God? He looks to “he who is
humble and contrite in spirit
and trembles at my word” (Is.
66:2). Judas trembled, but his
contrition was without faith in
God’s mercy in Christ. He tried
to bear his own sin in the form
of a noose. Jesus does not say,
“see to it yourself,” (Matt. 27:4)
but “come to me, all who labor
and are heavy laden, and I will
give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you. . . and you will find
rest f or your souls” (Matt. 11:28–
29). Matthias was a witness of
Christ’s ministry from John ’s
baptism to the resurrection
(Acts 1:21–22), chosen to
proclaim “the kingdom of
heaven” (Matt. 10:7) from
repentance to redemption and
new life. He and countless other
forgotten ministers continually
announce the truth that no
sinner must bear his own yoke,
for Christ bears it all and has
put sin to death forever in His
cross.

[F] S t. Joseph, Guardian of 03/19/2018 03/19/2018 1 It was King David’s idea to build
Jesus a permanent house for the ark
of the covenant and the Lord’s
name (2 Sam. 7:5–7). The
temple he planned was built by
King Solomon, but it was never
really David or Solomon who
housed and protected God. “The
Lord declares to you that the
Lord will make you a house” (2
Sam. 7:11) . S t. Joseph was not
Jesus’ true father, since the
child “conceived in [Mary] is
from the Holy Spirit” ( Matt.
1:20). The Church
commemorates him instead as
the “guardian of Jesus.”
Heeding the word of God’s
angels, protecting the unborn
Christ, sparing the inf an t Jesus
from Herod’s wrath, seeing Him
“out of Egypt” again (Matt. 2:13–
23) and bringing Him up “in the
discipline and instruction of the
Lord” (E ph. 6:4), Joseph is an
example for all Chri stian fathers
and guardians. But as with
David “housing” the Lord who
made a house f or him, Joseph
was never really the guardia n.
Christ was. His Name is “Jesus,
for He will save His people from
their sins” (Matt. 1:21) . The
“offspring” promised to
Abraham and renewed in the
promises to David is the One
“who gives lif e to the dead”
(Rom. 4:16–18). He is David’s
King, Abraham’s Lord, Joseph’s
Guardian and our Savior.

of an evangelist” ( 2 Tim. 4:5)
and “publishes peace” (Is. 52:7).
He is remembered as the lion-
hearted evangelist, depicted
with his f ellow evangelists a s

Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4. The
evangelist is often identified
with John-Mark of Acts and the
cousin of Barnabas, with whom
he worked in Cypru s to
“proclaim the Gospel to the

Despite their earlier
differences, Mark was
reconciled with St. P aul, who
considered him “very usef ul. . .

he worked in Rome (1 P eter

he wrote his Gospel from St.
Peter’s sermons before
founding the church in
Alexandria and facing a
martyr’s death.

[F] The P resentation of the 11/21/2018 11/21/2018 1 The story of the Virgin Mary’s
Blessed Virgin Mary Presentation in the Temple
comes to us not from S acred
Scripture, of course, but from
some of the apocryphal
Gospels. Although these are
never read in the liturgy, some
of what is written in them has
been accepted by the Church’s
traditio n, both liturgical and
artistic; they have given us not
only today’s feast, but also
influenced the depiction of
Christ’s Nativity and the
Assumption. It should always be
born in mind that the Apocrypha
(which exist in all the New
Testament’s literary categories,
gospels, acts, epistles and
apocalypses), are not all of a
piece. S ome are clearly written
to lend credit to one heresy or
another, but others are simply
harmless (or mostly harmless)
tales about the Holy Family
during the years of which the
real Gospels say very little. One
of the very oldest, the mid-2nd
century Proto-evangelium of
James, recoun ts the Virgin’s
presentation in the Temple as
follows:

And the child was three years

old, and Joachim said: Invite
the daughters of the Hebrews
that are undefiled, and let them
take each a lamp, and let them
stand with the lamps bu rning,
that th e child may not turn
back, and her heart b e
captivated f rom the temple of
the Lord. And they did so until
they went up into the temple of
the Lord. And the priest
received her, and kissed her,
and blessed her, saying: The
Lord has magnified your name
in all g enerations. I n you, on the
last of the days, the Lord will
manifest His rede mption to the
sons of I srael. And he set her
down upon the third step of the
altar, and the Lord God sent
grace upon her; and she danced
with her f eet, and all the house
of Israel loved her. And her
parents went down marvelin g,
and praising the Lord God,
because the child had not
turned back. And Mary was in
the temple of the Lord as if she
were a dove that dwelt there,
and she received food from the
hand of an angel.”

This story is told in similar

terms in the “History of Joseph
the Carpenter”, written about
the year 40 0, which goes on to
tell how the temple priests
chose Joseph to be Mary’s
husband. The Gospel of P seudo-
Matthew, of the same period,
adds that “Joachim, and Ann a
his wife, went tog ether to the
temple of the Lord to of fer
sacrifices to God, a nd placed
the infant, Mary by name, in the
community of virgins, in which
the virgins remained day and
night praising God. And wh en
she was put down bef ore the
doors of the temple, she went
up the f ifteen steps so swiftly,
that she did not look back at all;
nor did she, as children are
wont to do, seek for her
parents.” It then de scribes the
Virgin’s life of prayer an d work
in the temple, showing Her to be
a perf ect mod el o f religious life.
