Buiten de lijnen 04 /

Drawing front
Everything starts with a line. Later, it becomes something else. The line disappears into a drawing, a portrait, a landscape, a
word… Everything gets covered through the creative process, behind layers of actions pending the finalization of the artwork.
It is then impossible to discern this first line anymore. How did it begin?

Drawing is an essential modality of expression: the most simple, direct and flexible. With only a piece of paper and a pencil, one
can create a new universe without the restrictions of other techniques. This generates limitless possibilities that are multiplied
if you combine the ingenuity and skills of diverse artists and invite them to work within a common space, sharing their creative
process. Every edition of Buiten de lijnen is a commitment to the drawing: an experiment that transforms the space of De
Fabriek and keeps changing until the opening of the exhibition. But normally, we cannot grasp the progression behind each
artwork. Let´s walk through the process.

Juliette Verberk uses clean and simple lines as an effective way to communicate references to our contemporary
culture and its systems of representation with humor and irony. Verberk customizes elements of the pop culture,
mostly taken from fashion magazines where she analyzes all kind of stereotypes in a playful way. Then, she transforms
it into something else using the performativity of the body to express a code of affections and disaffections. In De
Fabriek, she has scaled her technique working with sketches in different sessions, taking over the space in the mean
time, and integrating its elements as scenography. Her work can be labeled as gender, queer, pop…and it is part of
the process too. She invites you to go inside, deeper, and take a position between representation and reality.

The work of Niels Goos is based on a continuous research that mixes different types of media with references
to art history. It usually starts with a small drawing and a sentence that are refined into a project where Goos goes
beyond the drawing, combining diverse objects that create layers of symbolism, and provide the viewer with multiple
possibilities of interpretation. It is an intuitive conceptual process that brings up allusions to the artistic practice
itself.A Polaroid, a drawing, a DVD, some fragments of a tale wall, and three hanging pieces like in the leather factories
of his childhood. Do you think the artist is a worker? Should the artist leave the building?

Gijs Scholten began with some lines and geometric figures floating on the wall, apparently rambling. Pure abstraction.
Slowly he connected some of them, as if following the theory of elemental particles, until everything took shape with
an unexpected realism. This procedure reflects the way he understands and synthetizes reality. The portrait is the
result: a sum of strata, much like we are all just made of a sum of personal experiences. In De Fabriek, his drawing
abandons the frame of the paper and expands, so we are forced to take some distance from it to recognize the
human form in the wall, and maybe recognize something from within ourselves.

From this distance, you will see a colorful landscape painted by Cathelijn van Goor where nothing is what it
seems. It is part of the new series “Rare digital phenomena” which is the consequence of a process that started with
some images taken from Google Maps Strew View. The origin was a distortion in these images provoked by a digital
failure that transformed the digital representation of the reality into a parallel universe open to be explored. With
our obsession to foster technological innovation, no one seems to worry about the failures and their effects. When
we lose control over the inventions and something else materializes. Cathelijn van Goor captures these temporary
effects rethinking the idea of progress and its deformation.

At this point perhaps you have noticed that there is just an empty wall in front of you. If you approach, you will see
some lines drawn. Get closer. Now you’ll see some colors. Get even closer; you are almost touching the wall. Do you
see it now? There are some little figures; inspired by a model railroad set from the Fifties. Each one has a sentence,

a legend that is filled with emotional wisdom and smiles. Find yours! The humor is back in the room. Sara Bomans
has conceived an unusual methodology in two stages to work on De Fabriek. The first one that determined the base
of the drawing was made by the thorough and spontaneous trace of Iza Roes. Then, Bomans decoded this unique
landscape, adding the characters, creating an alternative cosmos, with a pinch of irony and large doses of bright
humor that can only be diluted by deep quotes or the genius of a little girl scribbling on the wall.

Similarly to Cathelijn van Goor but in a different way, Marisa Rappard has construed an ancient map from the
sixteenth century in a sketch, a process of drift and discovery that introduced the old urban planning as outline for
something else. In De Fabriek she redefines this drawing in a more careful process, consciously taking some distance
to highlight different areas and shaping original forms. In doing so, Rappard has wittingly generated a balance with
the rest of the works in the room. The result is a singular landscape playing out with our imagination. Rappard is
welcoming you to get lost into the picture and discover new routes.

Last but not least, you will find the most complex scene in the room. Vincent Bijleveld presents a passage
taken from his dream world that combines many of the subjects that are discussed in this text. It is an allegory
of how images, symbols and their systems of representation strongly influence our perception about the world
and ourselves. It is an unchanging question that has always been present throughout history. In this work, Bijleveld
portrays a jumble of multiple strange figures from different ages and centuries that have occupied a museum, the
best place to perform a reflection about representation: medieval symbols, religion, new media, technology…It has
been a slow and accurate progression, drawn directly onto the wall and, at the same time, it was a pleasure to see
the evolution of all these characters.

In fact, everything started with a combination of individuals and subjectivities. Later, they have constructed a united space.
It has generated an organic tour that allows you to walk through, from one drawing to the next or just cross over the room
connecting works and creating lines. I perceive it as an invitation to think about your own creative process, going outside the
lines, taking a position here in the room and outside, in your life.
