Slide 2: Main Premise of Theory instates: “A nurse does not only seek to alleviate
physical pain or render physical care-she ministers the whole person. The existence of
suffering whether physical, mental, or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse” –
Joyce Travelbee
Slide 3: Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy of care which focuses on the
palliation of a terminally ill patient's symptoms. The modern concept of hospice includes
palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes
Slide 4: 4 Meta paradigm concepts in nursing
Slide 5: Person is defined as a human being; both the nurse and the patient are human
beings. A human being is a unique, irreplaceable individual who is in continuous process
of becoming, evolving and changing
Slide 6: health – subjective health - state of well being in accord with self-appraisal of
physical-emotional-spiritual status.
Objective health is the absence of evident disease or disability as measured by physical
examination, laboratory tests and assessment by spiritual director or psychological
counselor.
Slide 7: environment - was not clearly defined. She defined human conditions and life
experiences encountered by all men as sufferings, hope, pain and illness.
Illness – being unhealthy
Suffering – is a feeling of displeasure which ranges from simple and transitory
discomfort to extreme anguish and to those beyond anguish such as the malignancy
apathy and indifference
Pain – subjective and A unique experience of each individual
Hope – the desire to gain an end or accomplish a goal
Hopelessness – being devoid of hope
Slide 8: nursing - Nursing is an interpersonal process whereby the professional nurse
practitioner assists an individual, family or community to prevent or cope with
experience or illness and suffering, and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences

Slide 16: Clarity - The theory clearly states the main concepts and adequately defines the
interaction phases of the Human To Human Relationship model and how theses
interaction phases help the nurse develop rapport with the patient
Slide 17: Simplicity, it is simple to uinderstand. The nurse and the patient needs to
satisfy the stages inorder for them to reach the goal
Slide 18: Generality - The theory has a wide scope of application, but only applicable to
those patients in distress and have life changing events
Slide 19: Empirical Precision - Some of Travelbee’s ideas are common practice in
nursing and does not appear to develop her propositions using findings of researh
Slide 20: Derivable Consequences – the theory has potential for use in practice as long as
its within the limitations of scope. 1. individuals who are ill and suffering, 2. conscious,
3. willing to invest in deve3loping rapport, 4. willing to participate in the making of care

two human beings – Through respectful communication, the patient and nurse can
understand each other and a trustful relationship can be established, thus helping patients
find meaning in their experiences particularly occurring around illness
