For this assignment I researched the Women Shelter of Long Beach. I spoke with Jessica
Hernandez in the donations department and she was really helpful answering questions about the
shelter and their goals there. The shelter has a mailing address of P.O. Box 17098 Long Beach,
CA 90807; however, the shelter’s address was not given due to confidentiality and safety of the
women. There is a 24-hour emergency hotline women can call if they need an emergency center.
The shelter offers a somewhat wide variety of services. They have a 24-hour domestic
violence hotline, in which trained domestic violence counselors are there to offer support and
assistants in emergencies and can offer referral services. They have an Emergency shelter with
offers safe housing for 30-45 days to victims of domestic violence and their children. This site
offers case management, housing assistance, legal assistance, therapy, and peer-counseling. The
Domestic Violence Resource Center is for clients that are in need of more supportive services
like the therapy, legal assistance etc., but do not require shelter services. They also offer support
groups for male victims as well as for the LGBTQ community. Lastly, they offer Children and
Youth services and Family services. These services provide counseling support groups,
education etc.
The vision behind the Women Shelter of long Beach, is to bring awareness, support,
tools, and education to form and maintain violence-free relationships. The shelter started as a
donation of a house by Dr. Virginia Corbett in 1977. It was a four-bedroom, 11 bed shelter that
provided assistance for women and their children. As the needs and funding grew, they expanded
and moved into a new building that is an 8 bedroom and 29 bed emergency shelter.
The typical visitor of the emergency shelter is from some sort of domestic violence
background. The shelters are fully equipped to house the victim and their children for a little
over a month. The services they provide to each victim is catered to the victim’s needs. Whether
they need a one-on-one counseling, peer counseling, legal assistance, or health assistance.
CONCEPT
For my inspiration I immediately thought of artwork done by Bobbie Burgers. Burgers’ paintings
are filled with powerful use of color that I believe women who inhabit the transitional home
will take some inspiration and feel relaxed yet strong with the colors depicted below. Each
scheme is period appropriate for an updated Federal style home.

The lighting selected are modern takes on traditional lighting. The wallcoverings and flooring
provide an updated look on the traditional federal style. The wallcovering color selections tie in
with the overall color scheme and brings a unique addition with the textures selected. All materials
come from companies that have sustainable practices.
MATERIAL MAINTENANCE
• Hardwood Flooring: Vacuum or sweep your floor regularly with a soft-bristled attachment or broom, especially in high-
traffic areas. This prevents gritty dirt and particle buildup that can scratch the wood’s surface. Don’t use vacuums with a
beater bar or power rotary brush head.
Use protective window coverings to block fade-causing UV rays and excessive heat from direct sunlight. Most wood types
will gradually age when not covered, so it’s a good idea to rearrange rugs and furniture periodically to help it age evenly.
• Carpet: Always treat the affected area immediately. The longer the spill sits there, the harder it'll be to remove the stain. For
a food spill, gently remove as much solid material as you can with a spoon, or a dull knife. Add water and blot, using
detergent sparingly if needed. Then, using the highest suction function, vacuum back and forth, adding more water to the
stain as you go until completely clean.
• Wallcovering: Vinyl wallcovering is easily cleaned using clear, warm water and mild soap with a natural sea sponge. If a
damp sponge fails to clean dirt and smudges, spray the soiled area with a laundry spot remover or rubbing alcohol and wipe
in circular motion. Blot excess spot remover from the surface with a clean damp sponge. Do not use solvent- based cleaning
agents, lacquer thinners, nail polish remover, pine oil, or cleaning agents containing bleach, which may cause discoloration
over time.

Justification/Reflection
For the women’s shelter in Boston, MA I wanted to really make use of the natural light from the
abundance of windows in the floor plan. I kept the main colors neutral and light with pops of color in the
fabric selections. The lighting selected are modern takes on traditional lighting. The wallcoverings and

In this class I learned the importance of diving deep into any sort of preliminary research about
who your client is and what they do daily. It was important to learn about the families that stay and
what they endure, in order to create an environment that is not only functional for everyone, but a safe
and pleasant place to stay. I really enjoyed working as a team in the beginning with Sabrina.
Communication with her was flawless and we worked really well together, especially with Google Docs
in our corner, we were able to work simultaneously and get the project done faster. Overall, I really
enjoyed this course and really enjoyed the live presentations. It was great to explain my design and have
instant feedback.
