MS - Emaco S22 NB - 10/2013

THIS METHOD STATEMENT COVERS THE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF

EMACO S22 NB TO NEW CONSTRUCTION REPAIRS BY HAND APPLICATION.
METHOD STATEMENT: EMACO S22 NB
Product Description - a shrinkage compensated, high strength repair mortar reinforced with EE
fibres, suitable for placement by hand placed method.

1. GENERAL:
1.1. If required the area to be repaired should be marked on the structure, and should be
subject to revision based on conditions found as breaking out proceeds.
1.2. All areas of concrete identified as defective or contaminated should be removed.

2. PREPARATION:
2.1. After identification, the edges of all repairs should be cut by diamond blade to produce an
edge depth of 10 mm. There should be no feather edges.
2.2. Loose concrete within the cut out areas shall be removed.
2.3. Removal of loose concrete should be undertaken using suitable mechanical means or
high pressure water jetting. Removal of concrete should continue until sound, dense
concrete is encountered.
2.4. The substrate should be prepared to a rough surface where the aggregate is showing.
2.5. The prepared surface should be sound, free of all oil, grease, loose aggregate or other
contaminants that could impair adhesion.
2.6. Exposed steel should be cleaned by high pressure water jetting, mechanical abrasion or
grit blasting, and should be washed down with potable water to remove any residual
contaminated rust.
2.7. If reinforcement has deteriorated, this should be removed and replaced as directed by the
Engineer.
2.8. Thoroughly saturate the surface of the concrete to provide a saturated, surface dry
condition. Any standing water on flatwork should be removed prior to application of the
mortar.

2. COATING OF STEEL:
3.1. Generally there should be no need to coat the reinforcement

4. PRIMING OF CONCRETE:
4.1. Bonding slurries are generally not required with EMACO S22 NB. A sufficient method of
priming the concrete should be by saturating with potable water to give a saturated but
surface dry condition.
4.2. Priming of substrate may be required for some overhead repairs which cannot be prewet
due to difficulty in prewetting or where water is not readily available.
MS - Emaco S22 NB - 10/2013

5. TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS:
5.1. EMACO S22 NB shall be used when the ambient temperature is between +5°C and
50°C. Chilled water shall be utilised to prevent mixed material temperatures exceeding
32°C.
5.2. In hot weather areas to be repaired shall be shaded from direct sunlight.

6. MIXING:
6.1. EMACO S22 NB should be mixed using a heavy duty drill and paddle or in a forced
action paddle mixer.
6.2. Water addition shall be between 3.25 and 3.75 litres of potable water per 25kg bag
depending upon the consistency required
6.3. Pour the required amount of mixing water into the mixing drum. Start the mixer and add
the EMACO S22 NB powder rapidly and continuously. Mix for approximately 3 minutes
after all the powder has been added until mortar is homogeneous and lump free.

7. APPLICATION:
7.1. After mixing, EMACO S22 NB can be applied by hand or spray to the prepared repair
area.
7.2. Where the hand application of EMACO S22 NB is to exceed 50mm in thickness vertically
or over head, this must be built up in layers, each not exceeding 40mm. Each under lying
layer shall be cross hatched with a trowel or spatula and allowed to achieve its initial set
prior to a subsequent layer being applied in the same manner.
7.3. For details of dry and wet process spraying please refer to BASF technical services
department.
7.4. When the mortar has begun to stiffen, the surface can be levelled using a screed bar or
wooden float. Final finishing may be done with a wooden, plastic or steel trowel,
depending upon the finish required.

8. CURING:
8.1. Good curing is essential. Particular care is required in hot and/or windy conditions.
Curing can either be with a product from the MasterKure range, and/or by covering the
work with a properly secured wet cloth or hessian and plastic sheet.
