Assignment

General directions: Form a group of 2-3 members. Answer the following problems using the prescribed
format (Given, Required, Solution) on ES papers. Box final answers. Draw necessary figures (FBD, KD,
IMD).

Deadline: March 15 (Th), class hours.

1. Find the tension developed in the cord and the

acceleration of all blocks at the given instant. The coefficient
of kinetic friction between block A and the floor is 0.1. The
masses of block A, B, and C are 2 kg, 8 kg, and 5 kg,
respectively. Note that FMA and DMA have different sign
conventions.

2. A small sphere B of weight 10 lb is released from rest in

the position shown and swings freely, first about O and then
about the peg A after the cord comes in contact with the peg.
Determine the tension in the cord just after the cord comes
in contact with the peg (θ = 0°). Also, what is the work done
by the cord on the sphere?

3. Antonio sent Richard a mystery gift, with a note that reads “JUST
A GLIMPSE OF THINGS TO COME…” Richard opens the box and a
0.2-kg glove attached to a spring (with an original length of 0.4 m
and a constant equal to 5 kN/m) hits him squarely in the jaw. The
time of impact was approximately 0.1 s, after which it was
observed that the glove moves downward at a speed of 1 m/s.
Determine (a) the velocity of the glove just before impact, and (b)
the average force exerted by the glove on Richard’s jaw. Neglect
the size of the glove.
