Lesson Plan: Wind

I. Content and Standards:

a. K-ESS1-2- Make observations (firsthand or from media) to collect data
that can be used to make comparisons.

b. K-ESS2-1- Scientists look for patterns and order when making

observations about the world.

c. K-ESS3-2- Events have causes that generate observable patterns.

II. Prerequisites:

a. S.K-2.A.1.1.1 Identify a scientific fact as something that can be observed

using the five senses.
b. K-ESS3-2- Read grade-appropriate texts and/or use media to obtain
scientific information to describe patterns in the natural world.
III. Essential Questions (provide a framework)

a. What is wind?

b. How does wind move?

c. How does it feel?

d. How does wind affect objects?

IV. Instructional Objective:

a. Students will learn facts about the wind

b. Students will observe and record data on how wind acts on objects.

V. Instructional Procedures:

a. Entrance- Students will share what they know about the wind.
b. Students will take their wind flags outside to measure the wind.

i. Flags previously made and given to students to decorate in the

morning.

c. Students will listen to a book on wind (If time).

d. Students will return to their tables to look at page 35 in their journals.

i. Students will describe what they see in each picture, corresponding

to the wind scale.

ii. Students will respond with a possible wind scale level for a given
situation (i.e. my hat blows off my head)

e. Students will be given a collection of objects and make predictions on the

scale of wind needed to move them.

i. Students will work with their table groups

ii. Students will share their predictions to be recorded on the easel to

compare actual levels.

iii. Students will be given a straw to use to concentrate their air on the
objects.

iv. Students will practice blowing 0, 1, 2, and 3 levels

v. Students will experiment and record their findings.

vi. Students will share findings.

f. Exit Ticket- Students will be asked to share 1 thing they learned about
wind today
VI. Materials and Equipment: Weather and sky journal, Book on Wind, Straws,
prediction work sheet, collection of small objects.

X. Self-Assessment: Student engagement throughout the lesson, student
