MIAMI RESCUE MISSION 2

On Saturday the 17th of February, 2018, I visited the Miami Rescue Mission/ Broward

Outreach Centers located in Miami, Florida. There, I learned that the center was first established

back 1922 and is nonprofit origination. The organization also runs and operates other centers

around Broward County area. The organization has been a long-standing commitment to

providing homes for families and individuals, who are most vulnerable in the community and are

at high risk of not being offered the necessary services. They pride themselves on helping the

homelessness by providing shelter and food (A. Brown, personal communication, February 17,

2018).

However, this center only provides housing for males who go through a religious training

program to help them integrate back into society. The aim is to offer a safe environment where

life experiences can be shared and at the same token, provide them with the necessary skills to

help rebuild their lives. To assist their clients, they offer them computer classes and also teach

them how to create job resumes to seek employment (A. Brown, personal communication,

February 17, 2018).

The building is easily accessible from the street and provides a safe living environment

for its residents. This location has been in operation since 1992, and it has assisted hundreds of

males to transition from homelessness back into society. In addition to providing shelter and

learning for its residents, the center also offers food for hungry people that reside in the

community (A. Brown, personal communication, February 17, 2018). At the center, I

participated in sorting and bagging snacks for the needy, then walked the streets with other

students and distributed them to homeless people.

According to the authors Lawrence A.T., and Weber. J., (2014), businesses need to

become actively involved in changing and improving communities. As the centers are nonprofit

organizations, much of its funding comes from companies that support their initiatives in giving

back to the community. Lawrence and Weber describe this as being a civic engagement. In the

Cayman Islands, such shelters do not exist as there is not a significant demand for homeless

shelters. For me, the most exciting part of this exercise was shopping at Walmart for the snacks

as it was necessary to stay within budget.
