INTRODUCTION

Digital Connectivity is one of the most important inventions of the modern era. As the
connectivity becomes ever more important, modern technologies are emerging to connect the
entire globe with better, faster service. Thus, the demand for faster and reliable connectivity for
business entities, research and development projects and academic institutions have been an
integral concern.

Higher educational institutions involve a lot of record keeping to track progress of students.
During high-traffic periods, such as registration, exams, and grade reporting, information needs to
be transmitted quickly and reliably. Latency produces bottlenecks that could cause students,
professors and employees to miss vital deadlines.

A high-performing network is required to ensure that the system doesn’t shut down when
users simultaneously rush to prepare things before the deadline.

In higher education, the ability to scale up and down is important because new student
populations are continually moving through. The system needs to scale to respond to changing
workloads. Unlike in business, employee populations don’t typically change as regularly and
drastically as they do in education. Registration time at a university is essentially a huge period of
onboarding that places stress on the system. Hence, the need for continuous upgrade for networks
and communications is always a necessity.
Angeles University Foundation is a private educational institution which provides diploma,
undergraduate courses and postgraduate and located at Mac Arthur Highway, Angeles City. Its
existing network, a Flat Network, have faced challenge due to the growing number of students in
the last 5 years where by internet users has grown as with poor network infrastructure and services
provided, this has made the network slow, unavailable all the time, unreliable and difficult to
manage.
A Flat Network is a computer network design approach that aims to reduce cost,
maintenance and administration. Flat networks are designed to reduce the number
of routers and switches on a computer network by connecting the devices to a single switch instead
of separate switches.
Flat networks are typically designed for homes or small businesses where network
requirements are low. Among its disadvantages are poor security, no redundancy and limited
scalability and speed. Connecting all the devices to one central switch, either directly or
through hubs, increases the potential for collisions, reduced speed at which the data can be
transmitted and additional time for the central switch to process the data. It also scales badly and
increases the chance of the network failing if excessive hubs are used and there are not enough
switches to control the flow of the data through the network.
At present, Angeles University Foundation Main Campus has 72 100-Megabit and 4
Gigabit Ethernet switches which still not adequate to supply the workload of the whole network
system. With the continuous growth in the population, additional switches are needed. Internet
connection is fluctuating from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps, but based on the requirements and needs of
the university on a daily basis, 500 Mbps of internet connection is desired. Video streaming and
video conferencing is advisable during weekends since there is less traffic during these times.
As one of the top universities in the country, AUF has taken advantage of the technology
as a medium of instruction. AUF has incorporated several E-learning technologies and online
courses to be at par with other leading educational institutions. But at present, the students of
university cannot fully maximize these innovations due to limited number of access points.
Currently, 60% of the access points of the university need some upgrades.
With the problems stated concerning the existing network design of Angeles University
Foundation, the introduction of new network design should be presented.
This research study includes a network-based system on LAN security whose main aim is
to upgrade the existing network of Angeles University Foundation, handle traffic, provide reliable,
fast connection and available anytime and ensure security of users and the system.
Through this system, network will provide more services and good connection to reduce
the current problem of non-reliability, non-availability and other problem.

Objectives
The following are the objectives of the study:
· Increase speed of processing and response time.
· Design and implementation network security and Qos.
· IP Address management &provide redundancy link to avoid link failure.
· Provide flexibility to meet user requirement.
· Upgrading existence LAN and integration of voice in network.
· Once login with valid username and password in the network, the administrator can
perform assignment of Address, troubleshooting and configuration.
· To perform secure login and provide remote access to the network by using telnet.

Statement of the Problem

The current network is facing the following problems:
· No redundancy: large failure domain, device failure, no network segmentation
and link failure also synchronization
· Accessibility and availability: the current network is not available all the time
due to failure of device and link.
· Security: with the current system security is not implemented to protect users.
· Manageability: due to local based management of network. Network
administrator and technician are required to move one location to another and
troubleshooting is becoming.
· Flat Network Design: no scalability and large point of failure

Scope and Delimitation

The proposed system will ensure availability, security, redundancy, manageability and
better performance of the existing network of Angeles University Foundation Main Campus. The
users will be divided in terms of VLAN and all access to services will be allowed by Access
Control List, also reduce link failure and device failure by implementing routing protocol and
lastly to integrate voice communication in form of IP telephone in addition. The proponent will
implement 2 routers to manage traffic. The proposed network will allow only network
administrator to login from a remote location for configuration and troubleshooting using telnet
particular switches.
These are services will be provided by the proposed hierarchical network:
· Telnet
· IP telephone
· VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
· Port Security
· Rapid STP (Rapid Spanning Tree)
· HTTP
· Routing Protocol
· The expect output from this project is LAN and Wireless implementation in the
campus
· Buildings. User may connect to the network anywhere within the campus. LAN
and Wireless
· Networking for small area offers computer connectivity with no strings
attached.
