ESSAY (1 item / 15 mins)

QUESTION: The Earth Hour Movement holds an annual event of switching off lights for an hour. \A lot of
countries around the world participate “to celebrate their commitment to the planet.”

Do you think this helps save the environment? How?

Instructions to Teacher:
1. Give the students 15 mins to answer the question above.
2. Tell the students to use mind mapping while they are brainstorming.
3. While the students are answering, go over their essay scores from the UPCAT diagnostic test, noting the
comments written by the corrector.
4. When the time is up, discuss the points mentioned in “Teacher’s Guide for Essay Writing Session”.
5. Use the comments from their Diagnostic test essay to emphasize the students’ points for improvement.

TEACHER’S GUIDE for the ESSAY WRITING SESSION

When teaching essay writing, teachers must remind their students of the following:
• First, they should read the directions carefully and follow them. They should understand what is being asked
of them so it will be easier to figure out what they want to say and how they will develop their ideas.
• The essay should be composed of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction's purpose is to
grab the reader's attention and present the writer's main idea. For the body, each paragraph must contain a
point that discusses the main idea. Each point should be supported by facts, details, or examples. The
conclusion should wrap up the essay in a manner that will leave an impression on the reader.
• They should remember to use the appropriate tone, style, and language, depending on what kind of essay
they have to write. Remind them that they don't have to use big words to make their essay substantial. Use
words appropriately; it is better to use simple words that will get their meaning across clearly. Also, a long
essay does not mean a good one.
• Encourage the students to write about what they know. This allows for more substance in their essays,
especially when writing on a time limit.
• It helps to read or watch the news and to know about important issues and events. They should be aware of
what is happening around them so they will be able to offer more information and insight in their essays.
• Before writing, they should brainstorm and outline. Thinking through an idea well and creating a rough outline
of their thoughts will make writing faster and more efficient and organized. Initially, they should jot down all the
relevant ideas and thoughts they come up with, lest they forget some, and then proceed to arrange these into
a rough outline. Remind them, however, to not spend too much time on the outline; it should only be a guide
for the actual writing.
• They should not include unrelated thoughts or points they won't be able to develop in the essay. They should
use the time to flesh out ideas and support assertions with facts, details, and relevant examples.
• For an opinion piece, ask the students to pick a side and defend it. Being neutral won't make for a better
essay; in fact, it will make for a weaker one.

MORE TIPS!

These are helpful for writing any type of essay, be it for your college application, the entrance test, or current and
future class requirements.
o Be aware of current issues and other significant events in history. Read or listen to the news. It will help
if you know some facts about recent issues and other major turning points in history. (This will also give you
confidence when you take the exam.)
o Practice expressing an opinion on issues. When you encounter controversies or issues, try to take one
side and justify why you chose to be on that side. Don’t be neutral. Neutrality will not be applicable,
particularly if you are asked to write an opinionated essay.
o Don’t think about being “safe” when it comes to writing your essay. Choose one side and defend it.
Evaluators will be looking for coherence and conviction aside from impeccable grammar.
o Brainstorm. On-the-spot essay writing in college admission tests are time-pressured. The ACET, for instance,
will require you to write two essays for only 15 minutes each. So practice thinking as fast as you can.
o Read and understand the essay question carefully.
o Conceptualize an outline or a mind map of what you are about to write. However, you must remember
that outlining your thoughts should not consume so much time. Take note of the time limit; then budget your
time.
o Answer the question directly.
o Do not make long introductions. Since your essay is limited due to time pressure, you also have to budget
the length of each essay part (i.e., introduction, body, conclusion).
o If you are asked to write an opinionated essay, state your position at once. Then state your reason for
choosing the position.
o Support your arguments with facts or examples. You can even prepare these ahead of time. Think of two
or three references that you can use given any topic. For example, the movie The Social Network or the
historical figure Mother Teresa may be cited in a variety of topics. Try to think of your own examples.
o Use simple words. Do not use terms you do not really understand just to make your essay sound profound.
Be sure that words are in their correct usage and within context.
o Make sure that your essay is organized and focused. Do not include arguments, examples, or facts you
cannot discuss.
o Make sure that your essay is coherent.
o Finish what you started. Don’t leave your reader confused and hanging. Make sure that you have discussed
every point that you introduced.
o Check your essay for errors in grammar and usage. Grammar and usage are very important components
of your essay. These are what they initially check for in your essay exam.

3
WHAT ESSAY EVALUATORS LOOK FOR
Your essay would most likely get a high score if it:
o effectively and insightfully develops a point of view on the issue and demonstrates outstanding critical
thinking, using clearly appropriate examples, reasons, and other evidence to support its position;
o is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas;
o exhibits skillful use of language, using a varied, accurate, and apt vocabulary;
o demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure;
o is free of most errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics.

AHEAD Guidelines for Checking the ACET Essay

o Any Language or Reading tutor may check the students’ essays.
o Refer to the following score guide for the rubrics.
o Mark the answer sheet with the total score (e.g.: 8/10).
o Write descriptive comments to affirm a good point or write suggestions on how to improve the student’s
writing style or correct a grammatical error.
o The RA shall compile the comments for the Lecturer, who will discuss the tips and pointers for essay writing,
noting the students’ strengths and weaknesses

Note: The score for the essay part is not included in the total percent score for the ACET Diagnostic or Simulated
Exam. The essay score simply reflects how the student has mastered this portion and will serve as a guide on
how to improve future essays.
