Instructions 1. Read carefully and follow the instructions.

1. QUESTION TAGS
You know what Questions Tags are, don’t you?
If not, I’m sure you have heard them before, haven’t you?
Question tags are those short questions that are sometimes added to the end of a sentence when you
want someone to agree (or disagree) with you or when you are not sure about something and you
want confirmation. Sometimes they are added just to make conversation.

When we have a positive statement, the question tag is negative:

- You are happy, aren’t you?

When we have a negative statement, the question tag is positive.

- You aren’t happy, are you?

We are going to divide question tags in two; verb to be question tags, and present simple question tags.

a) VERB TO BE.

- Positive statementnegative question tag

 I am a teacher, aren’t I?
 You are a teacher, aren’t you?
 He is crazy, isn’t he?
 She is Chilean, isn’t she?
 It is a dog, isn’t it?
 We are students, aren’t we?
 They are birds, aren’t they?

So, to create negative question tags for a positive statement, we use the following structure:

Positive statement: SUBJECT+ VERB TO BE+ COMPLEMENT

Negative question tag: VERB TO BE+ not + SUBJECT

- Negative statement  positive questions tag

 I’m not Spanish, aren’t I?

 You aren’t a student, are you?
 She isn’t happy, is she?
 He isn’t tall, is he?
 It isn’t a table, is it?
 We aren’t friends, are we?
 They aren’t doctors, are they?

So, to create positive questions tags for a negative statement, we use the following structure:

Negative statement: SUBJECT + VERB TO BE +not + COMPLEMENT

Positive question tag: VERB TO BE +SUBJECT

b) PRESENT SIMPLE.

- Positive statement, negative question tag

 I speak English, don’t I?

 You eat sushi, don’t you?
 He plays the guitar, doesn’t he?
 She dances a lot, doesn’t she?
 It barks loudly, doesn’t it?
 We study sciences, don’t we?
 They run ten miles, don’t they?

So, to create a negative question tag for a positive statement, we use the following structure:

Positive statement: SUBJECT ++VERB(s) +COMPLEMENT

Negative question tag: DON’T // DOESN’T + SUBJECT

REMEMBER!!: When we use the pronouns he, she, it, we add and s to the verb in the affirmative

sentences.

 He doesn’t speak German, does he?
 She doesn’t do yoga, does she?
 It doesn’t sleep in the night, does he?
 We don’t cook meat, do we?
 They don’t sing, do they?

So, to create a positive question tag, for a negative statement, we use the following structure:

Negative statement: SUBJECT+ DON’T // DOESN’T+ VERB + COMPLEMENT

Positive question tag: DO / DOES + SUBJECT

Countable and uncountable nouns

Countable nouns (count nouns):

Countable nouns have a singular and a plural form. In plural, these nouns can be used with a
number- they can be counted. (That's why they are called "countable nouns").

Example:

1 friend, 2 friends, 3 friends...

1 book, 2 books, 3 books...

Countable nouns take many.

Example:
100 friends – many friends

Uncountable nouns (uncount / non-count nouns):

Uncountable nouns can only be used in singular. These nouns cannot be used with a number- they
can't be counted. (That's why they are called "uncountable nouns").

Examples:

I have a lot of money. (Not 1000 money)

You say I drink a lot of milk. (Not 5 milk)

Uncountable nouns take much.

Example:

100 money – much money

Note: Of course you can count money, milk, meat; but then you would use the currency, liter, kilo,
glass,...and say that you have got:

 5 euros or dollars... (but not 5 money).

 2 liters, pints, glasses... of milk (but not 2 milk)
 3 kilos... of meat (but not 3 meat)
 10 bottles of mineral water... (but not 10 mineral water)
