“Everlasting Life” Extension and Exploration Menu

Instructions: In addition to keeping track of Signposts and collecting

“everlasting life” evidence in your tracker, your job is to complete 2 of these
assignments EACH WEEK throughout the course of the book. You may complete these
in any order you would like. Keep in mind that certain tasks might be easier to
complete at certain stages in your reading! Please include the number of the
assignments you have chosen on each finished product so I can easily tell which
choice activities you completed. Keep this list and check off each assignment as you
complete it. I will collect your two weekly assignments on the day of each Check-In, so
they may be done at an appropriate pace for you. Do your best with this assignment
and challenge yourself to go above and beyond! Remember to plan ahead--some
assignments should be printed, and there will be opportunities to present these
findings to your classmates. Total of 5 assignments due by the end of the unit!

___ 1. Create and print a venn diagram comparing and contrasting your novel with a
research article of your choice on the topic of anti-aging or prolonging life. What do the texts
have in common? What differences? You should have at least 3 points in each section of the
circle. Include a copy of the article with your venn diagram. (RL 6.9)

___ 2. Complete and print a one page diary entry from the point of view of any character in
your novel. On the back of the diary entry, write a brief paragraph about the choices you
made in writing from that point of view. How did you know what kind of words to use? What
kind of emotion to portray? (RL 6.6)
___ 3. Brainstorm and print a list of a character’s “favorites!” You may choose any character
from your novel. These “favorites” should be things you infer from what you have read.
Include at least 5 favorites. For each favorite, include two pieces of evidence (with page
numbers) that helped you come up with that “favorite.” (RL 7.1)
For example: Favorite vacation spot, favorite sport, favorite season…

___ 4. Find and listen to a song that has a similar topic/theme as your novel. Write a one-
paragraph response in which you compare and contrast the song’s lyrics/message with
what the book seems to be saying about the topic. Use key details from both texts to explain
your understanding of the theme. Print and attach the lyrics. (RL.6.2, RL 6.7)

___ 5. Create a WALL-WORTHY plot diagram of your novel. The plot diagram should be big
enough to be seen from a distance, and each plot point should also have a small image to
represent the event. Make sure every step on the plot pyramid has been included. (This task
can only be done once the book is nearly finished!) (RL 6.3)

___ 6. Create a WALL-WORTHY drawing of the setting. On the back, write a well-developed
paragraph analyzing how the setting has affected the plot OR characters so far. How does
the location, time period, season, etc. affect the story? (RL 7.3)

___ 7. Look up “One Pagers ELA” online. Choose one character and decide on three character
traits that describe that person. Create a WALL-WORTHY one pager that includes inferences
about 3 character traits, as well as quoted evidence and an explanation for each one. The
design and images on the one pager are up to you! (RL 6.1)

___ 8. Plan and film a video “book talk” or “vlog” in which you analyze at least one quotation
from the novel. You can make this video humorous, fun, creative, etc. The video should
feature YOU and your voice, and should focus on your analysis of a quote from what you
have read so far. Remember to explain what the quote means and why it is important. You
are also encouraged to share your opinions, predictions, or thoughts about the book in
general. Take a look at some example “vlogs” online! (Ask Ms. Kahle about her own home-
made example of a “vlog” that she made in an old college class, if you are interested!) No
spoilers, and have fun! (For this assignment, you will need access to some kind of recording
device, a parent’s email of approval, and some creativity! In order to turn in this assignment,
you will email me a link/video clip by the due date.) (RL. 6.1, SL 6.4)

___ 9. Collect at least four pieces of figurative language from what you have read so far. This
finished product should include the quotation and page number for each piece of figurative
language, the type of figurative language it is, as well as a brief explanation of what each
piece means. You can display this information and breakdown of meaning however you
would like, but it must be polished and neat! (RL. 6.4)

___ 10. Write and print a complete and fully developed summary of ONE chapter that you
have read so far. Remember our guidelines for summarizing works of fiction! (RL. 6.2)
