Math 191G Syllabus - Summer 2010

Pre-Requisite: An adequate score on the math placement exam or C or better in Math 190.

Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Jon Rowgawski, W.H. Freeman and Company.

Objectives:
The goals are to present the concepts of calculus, to stress techniques, applications, and
problem solving, and to emphasize numerical aspects such as approximations and order of
magnitude. Overall, the goals are to illustrate the power of calculus as a tool for modeling
situations arising in physics, science, engineering and other fields.

Grades:
• Written Homework: 30%
• 20 Minutes Quiz on Each Thursday : 10% each
• Cumulative Final Exam: 30%
The course grade will be assigned according to the following, although, there may be some
relaxing of the cut-offs for A, B and C using the distribution of grades for the course. For
example, the distribution of grades may suggest that the natural cut-off for an A should be
89. If this is the case, then an 89 will be an A:
• 90-100 (A) • 80-89 (B) • 70-79 (C) • 50-69 (D) • 0-50 (F)

Quizzes:
In-class quizzes will be about 20 minutes in length and will test basic skills. Calculators will
NOT be allowed on the in-class quizzes. The quiz dates and times are given below:
• Quiz 1: Thursday, June 03 at 09:40 a.m.
• Quiz 2: Thursday, June 10 at 09:40 a.m.
• Quiz 3: Thursday, June 17 at 09:40 a.m.
• Quiz 4: Thursday, June 24 at 09:40 a.m.

Final Exam:
The final exam will be given during regular class time. The exam date and time is given
below:
• Final Exam: Thursday, July 01 at 08:00-10:00 a.m.

Communication:
Official communication to you will often come through your NMSU e-mail box. Please access
it regularly, or forward it to your current use address, as your success in college may ride on
your ability to respond quickly.

Attendance:
It is your responsibility to attend class. I expect you to arrive on time and to remain for the
full class period.

Withdrawals and Incompletes:


You have the primary responsibility for withdrawing from the course. I will authorize the
secretary in the Math Office (SH 236) to sign drop slips for me, in case I am not available.
The last date to drop with a ”W” is Thursday, July 01. Under university policy, an ”I”
grade is allowed only if a student has a passing grade for the first half of the course, and is
precluded from completion of the second half of the course by a documented illness or family
crisis.

Academic Misconduct:
It is assumed that you have familiarized yourself with the portion of the student handbook
and catalog pertaining to academic misconduct. Please be aware that such misconduct,
including but not limited to plagiarism, is subject to disciplinary action. Students should
